Does anyone on the forum work offshore in the Oil & gas industry? I work in the British sector of the North Sea and was wondering if anyone out in tenerife has managed to get any tax relief for living outside the UK but still being classed as working in the UK? (i.e equal time on/off rotation, so im classed as working in the UK for 6 months of the year, even though I will be living in Tenerife (eventually). it would be good to hear from anyone clued up on this.
basically I want money back from her majesty's government when I move out ! is it possible? |

If you live in Tenerife and work on the rigs for half the year and want to become resident here it's no problem if you're an EEC citizen. You just make tax declarations and pay your taxes here instead. If your company will agree to it.
If you're trying to avoid paying taxes at all.....sorry but the law says that you have to be resident somewhere and if you don't apply for residency here you're deemed to still be resident in the uk. _________________ .

Thanks for you're help but as he works outside the EU then he probably doesnt pay any tax at all. I have a few friends who work in Africa and they pay nothing but they are only supposed to be allowed in the UK for 3 months of the year. because of my job (being in UK waters) then I am classed as being in the UK so I therfore have to pay full tax but I have heard of people in Spain paying less.
Sorry for boring you to death with all that
Thanks again. |

I have had a chat with my mate.....
He doesn't pay taxes to UK government as he signed a declaration stating he lived abroad....
Also as he doesn't live here for more than 6 months he doesn't have to pay taxes here in Tenerife either....
BUT...he does have to pay taxes to the country he is technically based..Which is EGYPT...so the company that he works for pay his taxes locally....
They also said that although you will be living abroad for 6 months...you will be (as you said) working in UK waters so will have to pay the taxes locally to your job.....
They did say that they will find out a bit more for me too....lol
The company that pay him is an american company ....don't think that makes a difference but...
i hope this helps a little _________________ Find out more at www.myspacetenerife.com

The company should sort out all your tax.
If the rig is based in North sea then the company will pay your tax to the UK for you. You should also get a letter from the company at the end of every tax year stating the amount of tax that you have paid.
One more thing, because you will be technically still a UK resident you will not be able to gain residency here...via a residenci as you can only be resident in one country at a time...
My friend as said before works on the rigs in Egypt...4 weeks on weeks off. He is the rig manager. He was the one who told me all this info lol bless him. _________________ Find out more at www.myspacetenerife.com
