Well technically they are not jellyfish but hydrozoans and are colonies of small animals that live together with specialised functions that make up the entire organism we see, eg some of the parts of the colony form the tentacles and others make the float. It is only the tentacles which are dangerous because they contain the stinging cells! There were thousands here at the time this was reported and the dead bodies were all at the top of the beaches in Cristianos and las Americas.

brother bard, i have a question.. when they are washed up on the beach, how long are the stinging cells active for? for example, if one was to accidentally tread upon one of these say, on week after landing, would they be affected?

I don't actually know how long the poison stays active after the animal dies. I know they can't live long out of water and in the hot sun. I assume that seeing as we hear of no reports of people being stung by dead ones at the top of the beach that it is very rare that this happens and that most reports are from people stung whilst in the water. Logic says don't take any chances.

given the potential dangers involved, that's sound advice...

Anyone know where the name comes from?

Origin of the name
The Man O' War is named for its air bladder, which looks similar to a man of war under sail

REF: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portuguese_man-of-war
