Today we decided we are going to give this growing and looking after plants a real go.
Mt wife bought some really nice ones from the Guaza boot fair with tubs as well and compost. Re have potted them all and they are looking good so fingers crossed. We even bought some plant food to be safe.
I noticed on your plants Dave you have those brown balls to keep the moisture in, is that right? Well we bought some tiny blue ones and when you water the plant they dissapear beneath the soil!!!! We are going to look out for the big brown ones even though I think the blue ones look quite good.
You see some attractive plant life on waste ground, is it illegal to take these home and plant them?

Yes we have clay balls (no jokes please) on top of the soil of all our plants. These help to retain the moisture in the soil and you need to water less often.
I know what you mean about the plants on waste ground. I would be interested to know too. |

All land and it's contents belong to someone. Picking flowers, plants, even ROCKS is illegal in the national park areas.
The best insulator and water retention product here is Jable´ an off white light pummice stone. The local farmers use it for growing potatoes without soil. If you put it on top of your soil/compost don´t water too vigorously or it all floats off.

Some of the plants on waste ground are classified as weeds and you would be welcome to take them but some like the Cardón/Canary Spurge (Tabaiba) are protected legally as endemic plants and whilst they may get ploughed up by developers and road makers etc they shouldn't be! There are some wild flowers here that are down to only 1 or 2 wild populations left so it is a serious matter. Plants like the Castor oil bean grow commonly on waste ground and are not protected and are grown as ornamentals in the UK. Prickly pear cacti are not native and can be taken but the native succulents shouldn't be. I would suggest getting a copy of Native Flora of the Canary Isles book (on sale at most book shops and cheap) - it gives all the main wild flowers that you will see and says whether they are protected.
A word of warning some very attractive wild plants on waste ground are OK to take but are very poisonous - Castor Oil Bean and Datura aka Thornapple are 2 like this so whilst they may look great they shouldn't be grown in a garden if little kids might pick a leaf and eat it!
Nasturtiums are an attractive wild plant growing commonly and also the bight yellow Bermuda buttercup (especially in the north) and these are non-native non-protected plants.
The ornamental Tree Tobacco with yellow flowers that grows at roadsides and on waste ground is a weed although it is also sold as an ornamental and cultivated for commercial use.
Some non-native plants are very invasive and compete for ground with native species and there have been schemes and people employed to eradicate these as best they can in some areas.

I will admit I have taken a plant from some waste ground and am a bit concerned now due to some of the points to have made Bard.
I have no idea what it is so tommorrow if you would be so kind and I post a pic of it could you tell me if it is ok or not.

That's a Verode (in Spanish) a Kleinia neriifolia or Senecio kleinia (in Latin) or a Canary Candle Shrub in English.
It is related to the British ragwort and groundsel.
It is very common and not listed in my books as protected by law.
It has been used to heal wounds according to David Bramwell in Medicianl Plants of the Canary Islands by splitting the stems and binding to the wound or crushing the stems and putting the juice on it.
I have seen small ones in succulent collections in the UK.

| If I had room for more I would have been away already. As it is we will need to rehome a few in January when whe move to the other apartment with less terrace area. I am sure that I will have no problems finding homes for them. |

It makes a very ornamental plant I agree and, as I say, cactus and succulent collectors grow it in the UK. The Cardón that looks like a cactus and grows in clumps of green column shaped branches (not pads like the prickly pears) with spiny edges is a protected species, however, although it doesn't protect it from land developers it seems!
Your plant is in the leaf and flower season but in summer it will drop all the leaves. This is nothing to worry about and it looks just as good in many ways!
