my name is Darren Robson I am 34 years old
Our family are moving to Tenerife later this year and I am enquiring about carry my job over to Tenerife.
Here in England I am qualified community drug and alcohol worker with several years experience
Is there an opportunity to carry my employment skills and work within this field in Tenerife.
I am currently learning to speak Spanish
I have a vast knowledge of most treatments and support structures available.
I have a number of qualifications and have great qualities in the processes of recovery and on going support.
I am currently managing a drug project in North Tyneside In the North of England, but our family have decided to try a new life in Tenerife
I feel I can have an impact on the people who need help and support.

Has anybody heard of the rehab in granadilla or does anyone know of any more services that I could approach

Hi Darren,
I think I've answered you before, if not then a very similar request. To put it bluntly your chances of carrying on your profession here are little better than zero unless it's on a voluntary basis. You are not fluent in Spanish and I don't know what your many qualifications are but they'll probably count for nothing here. If you're moving to Tenerife then my advice would have to be think seriously of other skills that you can offer or start your own business, sounds a bit harsh maybe but I assume you'd like to know the true facts of life here.

I work nights in the hospital in Las Americas. There are a lot of non-spanish alcoholics and druggies and many of them are English so I think that they would appreciate if there was someone who speaks their language in the rehab. And Spanish is not that hard to learn anyway, as long as you want to learn and you have opportunities to learn it. It took me about 6 months as I had my first job in a kitchen washing up and no one spoke any other language but spanish. I don't know what the rehab centre in Granadilla is like but we do have some leaflets in the hospital. I know they administrate methadone as that is the place we send all the druggies for their dose. And I know that that is the only place that can give out methadone in the south of Tenerife.
You can always start in another job until you learn enough spanish to work in the rehab centre or even try straight away. You never know, as you know the system, maybe they appreciate that more and you could work just for the non spanish until you learn more Spanish.

I met Darren when he was over here for a weeks fact finding...

I think we should all broaden our minds beyond the obvious employment sectors such as Bar person, Waiter, PR, Ticket tout scum, Excursion tart etc.

There are jobs for people with REAL skills like Darren has. I work in IT and there is a distinct lack of REAL IT professionals on this island. I know of other professions that are sadly lacking here too.

I would imagine that Tenerife has more than its fair share of substance abusers seeing at we are host to so many nationalities and cultures. I think the reply from the nurse speaks volumes. Well done her!

Is it not forums such as these that act as a sounding board for inspired people to put their feelers out? Answeing in such fashion as "nah you wont get nout like that out here mate" does not really provoke positive reactions in anyone. Do we want to remain the bowel of Europe's employment dust bin forever?

As far as I know Darren is well on his way to moving out here, having met most of the south's local authorities on his last visit. Good luck to him and may many others follow! The more professionsals we have out here the more real jobs will be created and less scroungers!

Agreed there are jobs for real people with real skills. I think you must admit that these particular skills although possibly needed by those least likely to wish to pay for them are hardly in demand in Tenerife. Should forums become a place to encourage anyone with a desire to live in the sun to uproot and never mind the consequences?

Just to let makum101 know that I'm not a nurse, just a receptionist/interpreter. I haven't got any professional skills/training on anything, just got the job because of my language skills. My first job in Tenerife was to wash dishes and that's where I also learnt Spanish, 6 months working in a kitchen where no one speaks any other language but Spanish, it was easy for me to learn Spanish. Then I was doing waitressing for 6 months and then got the job in the hospital. I would never ever work for example as a pr for the bars and clubs at Veronicas and Starco.
