Hola everyone. I'm new to this site and at the minute just having a browse around. I just spotted this thread, and theres nothing like a heated debate to get me on my soap- box. and chuck in my two penn'orth. I've never been to Tenerife, but I've been to Lanzarote, and I'm pretty sure the spelling of Spanish words must be the same on both islands. Sorry Mr Cawley, but you're wrong. According to another reputable internet translation site, the correct spellings are; 'buenos dias' and 'buonas tardes' ( and no I havent spelt 'buonas' wrong) Have a look on alta vista babelfish if you doubt me, or are they also wrong?
Hasta luego. Very Happy

I'm afraid that's a typo. It's Buenos and Buenas.

Thanks for that Rob. I stand (or sit) corrected. I thought it was odd but when you see it there in black and white, - However, Mr Cawley was wrong, its buenAs tardes, as we all know. Well having got that out of the way, It's nice to say hello or hola to all you reefies. I'm gonna be joining you pretty soon hopefully. I was going to Lanzarote, but I've had a better offer. I've never been to Tenerife, so I thought I'd have a browse around and see what the island's like. I'm gonna be there mid August, if everything goes according to plan, so no doubt you'll be hearing quite a lot from me, bombarding you with questoins on life there,(yawn!). Initially I will be living in or around las americas, but until I know more I'll leave it at that. Incidentally, can anyone tell me if there are any secondary schools in the immediate vicinity?

Hi again Rob.
Well I'm in a bit of a dilemma about which school to send my son to. He's 12 and almost at the end of his first year in secondary school. If he was still at primary, I would have just put him in a spanish speaking school. cos I'm told that younger kids pick up the language quicker and adapt easier. I obviously don't want to make him miserable, but on the other hand, it would do him the world of good to be able to speak fluent Spanish, and it will open up a whole range of opportunities for him when he reaches leaving age. Do many english kids go to the spanish schools do you know?

there are some but remember the teachers don't speak english so every thing will be spoken to him in Spanish. Maybe a crash course first would be a good idea. Also until you're resident it's almost impossible to get a place in Spanish schools.

Thanks Rob. All this info is very useful. I'll be coming out on my own initially for a month or so to get all the legal work out of the way and hopefully find a permanent residence. Do you know of a site that can give me any idea of the prices for english speaking schools - or even mixed would be better if there are any. I'd just like to make the transition as easy and painless as possible for him. He's a bright kid, but I don't want him to be lonely or feel like an alien. It's bad enough for us 'grown ups' so it must be worse for the kids.

I think it's around 1000 or 1100 E per term. All the shcools have a mixture of races but the Luther school at Aldea Blanca is more Spanish but private.
