Hello to everyone. What a great forum this is, I have been reading it for hours. My hubby and I are looking to move to Tenerife this year and are coming out again in April to sus things out and make some decisions regarding work/business options.I have already read some great posts that have been helpful and at times very funny. Hope to make some new friends, maybe even say hi in person when we land. |

Welcome Minx, I hope the forum can help with your move.
I am sure you will make some friends here when you come over. We will probably be having an April meet up at some point so keep watching. _________________ Need a cleaner in South Tenerife ? Cleaning just got better... www.maid4tenerife.com

Hi Minx - welcome from us two too! We're hoping to move to Tenerife during the first half of 2007 and have just come back to England after a week out there looking at properties, locations and business opportunities.
We can assure you that the information contained on this forum is invaluable and has helped us so much.
We read all the posts and felt we were really well prepared when we visited last week.

Hi Minx - we're both from a hospitality background and have worked in catering and the licensed trade for most of our lives.
Our strong advice would be to avoid buying a bar - there are more bars and places that sell alcohol per square meter in Tenerife than in most other areas of europe.
The profits are wafer thin even in some well positioned bars - people rarely have enough set up costs and therefore run immediatly into cash flow problems and you will be working 16-18 hours a day to break even.
If you add to this the fact that many Brits who run bars are running them for the first time, in a foreign country and mostly without a working knowledge of Spanish, the whole thing becomes a recipe for disaster.
There are some very profitable bars but these are few and far between, just take a look at estate agency sites that sell businesses and you will find literally hundreds of bars for sale. Why?? . . .because they are mostly loss making.
We don't live in Tenerife yet and I'm sure the guys who do live there and contribute regularly to this forum will give you their own point-of-view and advice.
Don't let anyone spoil your dream and if you're really set on running a bar go for it!
Our advice though would be try to find a more unique business or start one from scratch - competition in the catering and licensed trade in Tenerife is mostly 'cut-throat'
Hope this helps.

Hi Minx, welcome to the forum!
I have not been on here long myself and I have found it fantastic too. What a great bunch of people.
I am flying out this coming Tuesday on my own for a month to research moving over there. I and am a bit scared but not as much as I would be without the forum! _________________ Anyone know of any photography opportunities?? |
