Post Post subject: vacancies in banking Reply with quote

Would anyone out there know if it would be possible for me to continue working in banking when i move out?

I have worked in banking for the last 10 years here in the uk and would love to carry it on but scrapped the idea due to the language barrier but the manager at la caixa who we opened our account with 2 weeks ago seemed to think it wasn't impossible as there is a lady APPARANTLEY who only speaks english who is employed by santander.

The lady you are refering to (who works for Santander) is the branch manager in the new Pasarilla Oasis shopping centre in Los Cristianos. Her name is Linda and hails from Bolton.

Thank you for that Tenereefer.

I am gob smacked. She speaks no Spanish and is branch manager of a bank.

How on earth can she run a bank with no Spanish language?

I know the phrase where theres a will theres a way but honestly how can she possibly get by with forms, customers, staff, telephone...........

But Santander do employ non-Spanish speaking staff in the Los Cristianos branch there used to be a girl there just to attend the English speaking clients and I think that Linda has a guy called Kevin working in her branch not sure if he speaks Spanish or not..... you would need to contact Santander and find out more about it.

I just had to check the calendar to make sure it wasn't April Fools Day or Dia de Los Innocentes etc. Confused

I've never even been into a branch of Santander, but I don't think I'm sticking my neck out too far by saying that if Linda doesn't speak at least conversational Spanish, then I'll eat my baseball cap Homey

When Santander opened a branch here in Palm Mar is was specified that all staff working there should be able to speak reasonable English, but the staff are still all Spanish.

Personally Fiona can't see it happening really. Crying or Very sad Apart from English bars etc all jobs that I have seen advertised require Spanish.

When are you coming over Fiona? If you have a few months or more then get learning Spanish. You could have basic conversational Spanish in a few months if you really concentrated and then practice it when you get here as much as possible. Perhaps then you could continue working in a bank. Be postitive and go for what you really want. Otherwise you could be stuck in a job you hate and therefore not enjoy living here.

hi jenny

Thanks for your positive attitude you are a woman after my own heart!

I am not naive in thinking i can get by in the banking world as i had already ruled it out in my own mind but after speaking to the bank manager at the bank we opened our account at i thought it MAY be a possibility and even looking on the santander and barclays website there are vacancies going for people who speak english and even to deal with purely english customers.

I am trying my hardest with spanish and am forcing myself to listen to my cassettes instead of the radio while travelling to and from work but it is impossible on a night when i get in from work with a 12 and 4 year old running riot!

We hoping to be out in about 2-3 months as we are due to complete by mid march with a bit of luck.

Hi Fiona, great that you have a positive attitude because that what is really needed when you are here. I just hope you are not disappointed when you try and get work here, and also what the salaries are here too.

I was not being negative but have seen so many people so let down with all their dreams when they get here and try to put it all in operation.

Good luck, keep in touch and let us know how you get on. Will you need to work full time ?
Very Happy Very Happy
