| I am looking to move to tenerife with my young family and will be looking for work. I am a singer/musician and currently play my local pub and club circuit, weddings etc. I am looking for contacts and will hopefully be out a couple of times in the next few months. I play a great variety of songs from 50s up to present chart music and play to the crowd. It would be great to get some advice on how to break into the Tenerife music circuit.[/code] |

Strangely here if you really play it is often more difficult than if you don't! Basically down south most entertainment venues want singers doing covers and tributes using backing tracks for the music. Musicians playing instruments and bands are a rarity rather than a norm. Original songs are more or less unheard of!
You don't say what you play but if its guitar or keyboards it should be OK if you can do a range of covers. Whatever you do you have to go round the venues to show them what you can do and be prepared to do free spots - no one is going to offer you a paid gig until they've seen how well you can do!

Going by what I have understood from my friends who sing/play at bars over her I should imagine your best bet would be to go around to as many bars as you can where music is played, places in areas like Puerto Colon, Las Americas, Los Cristianos etc are full of bars advertising acts every night, so if you have a CD of you performing or maybe some references from previous gigs take them with you.
There is quite a high turnover with acts on the island as often they are just people here for a few months giving it a try etc, so your chances are pretty high.
My friend went looking for bar work by doing that and actually go offered 2 gigs singing (except she cant sing bless her, so not much use)
