I don't think this is about rich or poor (or peasants and guitarists as joseito is saying), it's about music.
I don't know about the rest of you but when I play with my band it feels great - and when we do something exceptional I get this glowing feeling and can't stop smiling - for example we recently learned Design For Life by Manic Street Preachers, which isn't a particularly hard song but when our lead singer started playing the string section part on his guitar I just thought; that's fucking quality - and I couldn't stop smiling - it's a bond, 4 guys in a room buzzing off LIVE MUSIC.
You can't recreate that with a drum machine or a midi track.
Look at The Who, when they were in their peak their live shows were second to none, then in the 80's for some bizarre reason Townshend decided they should play with backing tracks - it worked on some songs like Baba O'Reilly but when I saw him playing acoustic guitar throughout the whole concert and I can hear a lead guitar playing from a backing track I lost a bit of respect for Pete - he didn't need to do that.
Music is not just about getting the notes right it's about soul and feeling - and backing tracks for me are just souless.

Further to what you have just said Johny I agree there is both a self pride and buzz about creating real music and a different quality to the person hearing it! It's real live music and a creation in itself by the musicians involved!
I do note that Tenerife acts are much more money driven though which I think is because, let's face it, many UK musicians are on the dole and so not so worried about not making money at gigs. The Manics were and the story goes they pooled their giros to pay to go to London to play. Cerys Matthews even said she couldn't have become famous if she hadn't been on the dole and busking after giving up her job because it allowed her the freedom and allowed her to meet another of the members of Catatonia. This has the knock on effect of making musicians more proud of their music as an art than as a money-making device! Acts play to get seen and for the buzz rather than to make money!

Then you are a true artist!  To be able to combine the 2 things: creating music you are proud of and making a good living are something that are hard to achieve for most so many people settle for compromises but not all! The true musician/writer/artist creates whether the world is receptive or not or whether they get paid!

Yeah, only so long as the peasant is there working his arse off to support the musos living on the dole!
Music is an art form and like I said, there can be art and creativity in everything we do, including being a peasant; and if this means doing some sort of productive work then that's even better.

There are lots of musicians who are being productive in areas where music is needed. I am sorry this is the case Bard but the demand for music in Tenerife is the way it is, and I am afraid we, in the touristic south, are very far from having the conditions needed for certain "original" music to thrive. You may have found this in Wales or elsewhere in the UK but this is only a small island in SPAIN, not a country!. So I would say do not expect local people nor the type of tourists we get to have the power/interest in supporting this "music revolution" you mention.
The job of fulfilling this touristic music demand is no obstacle for bands to still be able to write their own music and be creative and artistic on stage (no matter who wrote the damn song! look at jazz players...). Whether acts in Tenerife are doing this is another question.
Anyway, I don't argue the fact that live music is way better, and like Loaded said, you can't beat the feeling. But us human folks can get a "feeling" from a variety of human activities, not just "live music" -remember a LOT of people would just think you are "making a lot of noise" just when you are in the middle of one of your "live music orgasms". Likewise, you cannot deny the fact that a LOT of musicians (me included) can get "the buzz" out of performing over a backing track (specially when it sounds bloody good, and it can keep the beat properly unlike many live bands!), and also a LOT of audiences night after night do get a kick out of seeing this too!
With today's technology you can record any live musician and use his performance as a backing track, specially if they're all plugging into the same digital mixer!. If done properly, you could NOT tell the playback from the real guy, and I can bet you would be jumping and screaming just as if Slash was playing that solo (for example).

Surely every highly successful singer or musician on the world stage has a very strong ego and that is part of why they are as famous as they are? Nothing wrong with ego I say! If you don't believe in your abilities and music it's going to be much harder convincing anyone else it's any good!
I was referring not just to the south but the whole island. Santa Cruz is big enough to be turning out a music scene to represent the island(s) I would think!

Sure, we all need an ego.
What I meant was that we shouldn't let this ego grow too large; which, I supose you would agree, it's not a "healthy" thing to do. So far as it still lets you acknowledge and respect the uniqueness of others, you can have an ego as big as you want

Yes! It has been going on for a long long time (even before tourists arrived: folk music, latin-american music,...). Again, we're talking about Spain here and not UK, with all its implications for aspiring foreign musicians.
It's a big shame that the local and touristic worlds are so divided here.
I encourage you Bard to go to Santa Cruz then and try some of your tunes on the local crowds. Who knows, you might start a revolution and start bridging the gap between the two communities...
I know your Spanish is improving by the day so there you go!

Hi all!
As a tourist i have to admit that i prefer to hear cover versions played by bands on holidays, but its not that i am small minded or don't appreciate original music!!  Its just on holiday, most tourists prefer to hear stuff they know.
Some of the comments about bands who do covers i think are a bit harsh  . Most of the bands are obviously very talented to get where they are and obviously people like what they hear if they go back year after year... x |
