Hi all...we're coming on to learn about buying things in the shops, mainly food items & essentials.... there are some funny 1's that are just typically obscure words!! Like Carrot in English!, in french its Carotte, in german its Karotte but in Spanish its 'Zanahoria?' lol....
The main point is we're enjoying learning spanish, even with a few quirky & original words & are lucky to have a good tutor, if only for 1 more lesson tho & that we want to know more is a good thing..... as long as Kaz knows the word for OLIVES = Aceitunas....we'll both be ok!!! lol _________________ RICH & KAZ |

That's good to hear. There's nothing worse than watching the English in Mercadona trying to negotiate their weekly shop without speaking any spanish. Its usually some old northern granny at the deli counter jabbing her finger at the glass whilst shouting "Uno sliceo", and then getting irate when a Spanish assistant in a Spanish supermarket doesn't automatically understand full blown Geordie.... _________________ My Paranoia-Management Therapy is going great! I used to have to go to the phiilipes ( on the patch) and do the shopping for the bar.... including red apples, oranges, lemons, limes, plus other random stuff...... I remember once ordering sooo many apples the sangria did not need much wine ha ha !
Instead of trying to explain and hand them back I paid for them out of my own pocket, I only earned 25e a night ha ha I lived off apples for the whole week ! _________________ www.secretgardenholistics.com

Once you're actually here. it's amazing how you pick up new words all the time without realizing.
Whilst sitting in Subway using their free wireless connection, it's amazing the amount of Brits who come in who don't even attempt to speak the language. The guys in Subway always respond in English when I ask in Spanish but you need to persevere and eventually you'll sound good enough for the Subway guys to speak Spanish
Subway - the benchmark for all your Spanish language needs

Even if they speak to you in English there's nothing to stop you carrying on in Spanish. _________________ .

I know but it is hard to get out of the mentality of thinking well, have I said something wrong... it dashes your confidence I think when they do it as it as if they are thinking this is too hard work..... and just think if she knows I speak English she may save me having to listen to such bad attempts at spanish ha ha
It makes me nervous, but if they speak back to me in Spanish and I understand it and could carry on I used to be more confident in myself so felt more obliged to carry on.....
It is a hard one I hate feeling like a berk ! _________________ www.secretgardenholistics.com

It's often because they want to practice their English! You could say to them "I'll speak in Spanish and you can speak in English if you like". _________________ Who am I? Find out more here: http://www.myspacetenerife.com/index.php?page=view_profile&id=17

best word I have learnt is bebe - drink mucho mucho bebe!!!!
and botella el vino por favor - bottle of wine, please
yes I must get myself a little spanish dictionary too. spanish classes are fun but yes its definatly having the confidence to speak it to native speakers not just your peers in the class, and try and understand whats being said, sure it will be easier when you hear more often.
keep it up anyone that is learning it will all be worth it in the end

With "bebe" make sure you put the stress on the first e and not the second, otherwise it means baby!!
Keep it up. It really will make your life easier and more fun if you can actually talk to the locals! _________________ Who am I? Find out more here: http://www.myspacetenerife.com/index.php?page=view_profile&id=17
