Post Post subject: Coming soon to an island near you. Reply with quote

Hello everyone,

I have been browsing this site for a few weeks now to get a feel of what its like to live in Tenerife.

Although a little despondent with the work situation, as it appears you have to be young to stand a chance of getting work (oh to be a beautiful person). Unfortunately, I'm now in my 40's (I'm the djp) bit and my lady love (thats the vjc bit) is a bit older. And I hear speaking spanish would help, so I better get out the Espana Viva book again.

We are now in the situation where next year we are going to come over to Tenerife for a trial period (approximately 12 months), to see if its the kind of place we would like to spend the rest of our days.

From what I can work out, our best option would be to start a business of some kind. My background is IT, but, I think that I would rather do something else now. The good lady is a Medical Secretary I can't wait for her to get her first audio tape to type Laughing

I have had a few ideas for a business but need to find out some information on the land usage regulations. Any website addresses for the Tenerife government would be really appreciated. Something in my head says that rural tourisim is encouraged, I may have read it in a Tenerife news or Island Connections, I would appreciate any comments on that.

Anyway thats me, if I don't hear from you perhaps I will see you next year sometime Smile

Hello and welcome to you both.

Have you read the articles on living in tenerife and working in tenerife on this site (use the search engine) ?

The only jobs that favour beautiful young people are shot girls prs etc. For serious workers there is work but it isn't easy to find and unless you have exceptional talent then you'll need to be in Tenerife to find a job.

Changing trades as well as countries could double your problems.

Laws on land usage are very strict and must comply with planning regulations.

Rural tourism is being encouraged but you'll need a big budget, suitable properties don't come cheap.

search gobierno de canarias for a selection of gov web sites

Hello Rob,

Thank you for the reply, I have had a good look around the site and have read both of the articles (Living/Working in Tenerife), as I saw links to them in other posts.

I am glad that there are jobs, even if they require hard graft to find them. I just had the impression from other posts that you had to be young to get them. Easy mistake to make as ageism is strife in the UK, especially in IT.

I also had the impression that it would be difficult to transfer IT skills across to Tenerife, are there specific IT needs that are not covered on the island?

Google brought up some great links on the gobierno de canarias, I just wish that my spanish was was up to it. Translations sites are ok but....

We are going to double our efforts to speak the language.

Once again thank you for the information. Cool

If you have any questions regarding Spanish words, let me know. Don't think Rob would let me spend hours translating for you but I'm sure he won't mind the odd word here and there Anxious
