How many one bedroom apartments would you need to rent out in Tenerife, to earn enough rental money to live on?

Assuming that: -
Each apartment is only occupied only 25 weeks a year.
They are done as holiday rentals rather than long let.
The amount of money you need is only modest (enough to live on for a couple).
Say two apartments were mortgage free.

Is anyone of the forum sucessfully doing this?
Are two bedroom apartments or studios a better option?

if you're renting it yourself to tourists, you could probably charge around 200 pounds a week on average (Depedning on the time of year.

25 weeks x 200 pounds = 5000 pounds

Then you've got community fees, electricity, water, rates etc----

I'd say you'd need to book it more weeks or buy another 2 or 3 apartments.

that said if you plan to keep working then you'd only need one really - depends on your personal situation, but if you wanted to give up work then you'd need 2-4 apartments unless you had a pension.

Hi Loaded, thank you for the information.

The only reason I said 25 weeks a year, is because I am going work on the side of pessimism when trying to work out how much income an apartment can generate. The apartment would be available for the whole of the year.

I had hoped the answer would be two apartments, as this was what I imagined would be needed.

I will definately be looking for work, as boredom does not become me. As far as pensions are concerned, I do have one, but, I will not be able to get my grubby mits on it for 10 years. Even thats dependent on the government, and their ability to stop messing about with the rules.

As you have mentioned pensions what do people in Tenerife do about saving for old age?

Do you have any thoughts on whether it is better to purchase studios, one or 2 bed properties?

It depends on how much money you can get by one, if you can live on 5000 pounds a year then great, if not you need another apartment, job or pension to top it up.

bored in tenerife!! try staying here, this place makes you depressed, tenerife is heaven compared to here . Made good money from property here and time to chill in the sun

Boredinscotland, your a very lucky man. I know what you mean though London is equally depressing, I cannot wait to leave for sunnier climes sometime next year. When are you planning your great escape?

we plan to move when the dog dies he's 8 years old and we don't fancy taking him on a plane or ferry. We visit as often as we can, if you are going next year good luck!!

I heard that the life span of dogs has increased and they are now living up to the age of 20 (or was that something else). It is a long wait, but, I do understand your predicament, as we have had our own reason for delaying a move.

20 years!!!!! hope you are joking ,we were thinking maybe 5 years. If we thought that we would be better taking a chance on him surviving the flight and GETTING OUT of here, and cheers LOADED ,there is always a silver lining and it's not where we are just now

...can i just ask why you don't fancy taking your pooch on the plane or ferry?? he's not that old...is he ill?? is that why you don't think he'd survive the flight??..i wouldn't wait for him to die..take the risk....he might love it!!!
