Tenerife has a wild species of Plantain - Plantago arborescens (Canarian Shrubby Plantain or Pinillo) and like the others in its family it can be used as a medicinal herb. Plantains are antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, anticarcinogenic, good for coughs and colds, constipation and stomach problems.

So what would you do with it bard? Make a tea out of it perhaps ? Would you use the flower or leaves ?

Yes, that would be the right way and holds good for most herbs.
As a matter of interest the Greater Plantain (Plantago major), which although not native grows here and in most parts of the world, is a herb that was adopted by some of the American Indian tribes who found it growing where the white men had been. They found out it was of use as a herb but they called it "White man's Foot" because it followed where the white people went! And so it still does, as do many other animals and plants that have benefited from civilisation and colonisation of the world, unlike the majority for which the reverse applies! |
