Post subject: Photos from the Mariposario in Icod |
|
|
This could have gone in the Flora and Fauna forum but as they are mainly exotic species and this place is an attraction of the north I decided on here!
Here are a selection of photos of the Mariposario del Drago and its colourful inhabitants in Icod.

That's about natural size - it is one of the largest moths in the world!

Awesome pics!
Those moths put to shame the tiny moth that I caught knawing its way through my towel drawer last nite... Needless to say, it was even smaller when I finished with it _________________ My Paranoia-Management Therapy is going great! Now they're only watching me half the time.... |

Thank you, Mary! A good choice of places to see because you will be able to see the Drago Milenario and what is said to be the prettiest square in Tenerife all within minutes walking distance from the Mariposario. |

Goodness, fantastic pics.
The first one looks like something out of the film Red Dragon with Anthony Hopkins. _________________ Need a cleaner in South Tenerife ? Cleaning just got better... www.maid4tenerife.com

Thanks, Karl!
I hatched a pair of Atlas Moths when I was about 10 and it was really exciting to see the huge moth emerge. Sadly the pair hatched at too long intervals between the hatching of the other one and so I never got to breed them, although maybe that was good thing because my mother had had enough of all my creatures as it was at times! I had giant Assam Silk Moths and caterpillars, stick insects, many tropical fish tanks...and that was just inside the house!
I don't know about that film you mention but another large moth they breed at the Mariposario and that is fairly common on this island - the Death's Head Hawk - was in the posters of Silence of the Lambs, another Anthony Hopkins movie!
