Post subject: List of schools |
|
|
Hi all, hope you can help.
I am looking for a list of schools in Tenerife (English and Spanish) I have managed to find a couple of schools through reading your posts but don’t seem to be able to get a list. The reasoning for wanting a list is that school will dictate to a large degree where we settle in Tenerife, south preferred.
We are all going to learn Spanish beginning next week and are all determined to have a good understanding before we arrive mid 2009.
Dan will be 14 when we arrive. |

I don't know of any official list although you may find one with a spanish search. English schools in Golf del Sur; Cabo Blanco; Fañabe; Puerto de la Cruz. _________________ .

Hi Andy
If you put your son into Spanish school at 14 then keep up with the Spanish as much as possibly until you move.
In my opinion if he does not have a good basic understanding by the time you move do not put him into a Spanish school at that age.
Good luck and keep in touch. _________________ Need a cleaner in South Tenerife ? Cleaning just got better... www.maid4tenerife.com

Hmmmmmm There was a list created on another website...but that seems to have vanished.
Spanish schools are literally everywhere. There will be at least one in most towns.
If you have some idea of where it is that you want to live then we may be able to help with location of schools.
Obviuosly some will have a better reputation than others like in the UK.
I know it is difficult when deciding on where to live and where to go to school....BUT if you choose a school then move to that area...you may hate the area and want to move somewhere else.
I would decide on the area you want to live before the school choice...BUT that is just me..lol
Learn spanish before you arrive...then when you get here you will find it a lot easier.
Also I would suggest you think verey hard and whether you will send Dan to spanish school.
At his age he may have more difficulty adjusting....he will also probably be kept down a year or even 2.....As they do tests every year to get 'promotion' to next year.
At 14 he will be entering in to the final years with his exams. This is a hard enough time on its own, without the added stress of learning a new lanugage AND a new way of doing certain lessons. Although the structure is the same..The way they teach divisions and such like is totally different than in the UK.
You may find it easier to put him into the English school in Cano Blanco called wingate. This will see him t hrough his exam years on the same curriculum as in the UK.
Obviously this will be an extra expense, but it is not as expensive as UK private schools....
My children were 3, 6 and 8 when they started spanish school and they were very out going and so adapted quickly. Some children dont though and the older they are the harder it may become.
You want to enjoy living here and so try and make decisions that help make your lives easier and nicer...lol
I know it sounds all doom and gloom..BUT really it is not. You just have to be objective. _________________ Find out more at www.myspacetenerife.com

Excellent post Stripps. I'm nominating that for Jan champers prize. Kirsty's school site is no longer live, I looked for it as well. _________________ .

I have a list of schools from the government website. I can't copy it into here as it then doesn't stay as a table. If you PM me your email I can email it to you. Or look on the site yourselves: http://www.gobiernodecanarias.org/educacion/DGC/DirCentros/scripts/default.asp?categoria=37 and make a search. You will need to select Instituto de Educación Secundaria for High Schools.
But as Stripps says, it is quite late on to be joining a Spanish school and he will definitely be held back. In the Spanish system, if you don't pass all the necessary exams, you stay down a year, and he will automatically be put back one year if he does not speak a reasonable level of Spanish.
However, if you are serious and would like him to go to Spanish school and get a chance of a better job here after he finishes his education, there is no reason why, in one year, he (and yoursleves!!) could not be reasonably fluent, if he works at it. _________________ Who am I?
