UPDATE.....

our friend went down to the police station yesterday to put the forms in for a NIE....was given a tax payment form and told to pay the 9 EUROS in the bank then come back to apply. Put application in and told to return tomorrow for the form....

Until they get the form tomorrow I am not certain...but it was definitely a NIE i filled out and not the certificado de registro. Other people have been moaning as they think this is just another money manking scheme from Tenerife lol

Also the tax has gone up for the certificado de registro aswell....

So what is the latest.

Is it possible to get an agent to get the NIE for you without them going in person to the police station.

With the agent just having the NIE form, the payment form and a COPY of their passport. Is there anything the person applying needs to be there for eg. Signing anything. Or any other documents they definately need.

(already been told by a very reliable source they need the original passport but I need to see if anyone knows different as its forever changing)

Thank you.

There is a section on the bottom of the form that asks whether you want someone else to collect it for you. This must be filled in WHEN applying for the NIE and then it can be collected by the nominated person. I think that this is still current info.

Thanks for the link, Jenny.

We are considering to have a business on Tenerife and wonder:

Is it advisable to apply for the NIE ahead of time?

Can one use a home address from another country to apply, and then update it after settling on the island?

I am curious about the wording on the form, which translated online at the end as "the feminine genital mutilation." It seems a little odd, even for an online translation, which is anyway unreliable.

Does anyone have thoughts about it?

This is from the form:

This is the online translation of the above text:

The norms relative to the fundamental rights of the foreigners are interpreted in accordance with the Universal Declaration of Human rights and with the Treaties and International Agreements on the same current matters in Spain, without one c allege the profession of religious beliefs or ideological or cultural convictions of diverse sign to justify the achievement of acts or conducts opposite to the same ones, being linked the foreigners who are in Spain, for the current regulation, of identical way that the Spanish citizens, regulation that it includes, between other facts constitutitos of crime and punished with the corresponding sorrow to be determined for the judicial Authority, the feminine genital mutilation.

The translation is not bad, considering it is online. I have printed off the last page to show to someone Spanish as I find it very strange.

Yes, I know that you can apply from the UK but probably you can do it via Germany.

The most recent method of doing things is to apply for a certificate of residencia which automatically gives you an NIE number. The cert of residencia is issued the same day as you apply. You do not have to change the info of whereabouts for your NIE, only your residence at the appropriate ayuntamiento (town hall).

Somehow, I am "relieved" to know that another person finds it strange!

Thanks for your action on this....

Rob, that is useful information!

I don't want to mis-use the privilege of the board or be lazy by asking you instead of doing more difficult, direct research -- BUT, if you know --

What are the qualifications for a certificate of residencia?

Would we have to prove a certain level of income, etc.?

Do you know the amount of the application fee?

Thanks.

Any person intending to spend 3 months or more in Tenerife must by law apply for a certificate of residencia as I said to another member recently. I believe the cost is about 9 E, the info is on here but I can't be bothered to search.

No special terms for EEC citizens, just do it.

No proof of income is asked for.
