Hi there

I have a friend who wants to get rid of a large dog as she lives in an apartment and there is not much room for it to move. Therefore it barks alot and disturbs people on the complex causing obvious problems...

Does anyone know anyone or any company/rescue centre that can take it. K9 and Arico don't seem interested at all???

Awww the poor dog, has the owner tried walking it before they go out etc to tire it out and therefore it does not have the energy to bark. .... they need plenty of excerise or they will be hyperactive...

Other than that what about training, it just seems a shame to get rid of it, surely it is just a matter of time, attention and training ? Good luck anyway ! Lea x

In reality it probably isnt that K9 and Live Arico are not interested, but that they are full to capacity or even beyond.

These guys really do have a hell of a job to do and have extremely limited resources.

If it is a large dog then it will be even more difficult for them to take in, but if there was capacity I am sure that they would help.

I am not sure where you are in Tenerife, I assume the South, there is another refuge near the windmills just past El Medano. It is German run refuge, but again usually are full to capacity, might be worth a call though IF your friend has tried everything else.

Where did your friend get the dog, was she not in the same apartment when she got it. As Chris and Leanne say, is the dog getting the right amount of exercise and things to do to stop it getting bored.

What about asking (paying?) someone to pop in and take the dog out for a walk whilst she is at work? There are people who offer this kind of service.

There are a couple of Dog Training people that I am aware of here in the South, one even posts on here as far as I know, but I am sorry I can not remember their 'name' - I am sure they will read this thread and reply if they are able to help or give you advice.

It is a great idea to get someone in only for a little while to walk or give the dog some break up in the day.

Have they tried leaving the radio or tv on for the dog while they are out, I know my dog loves the radio. Or even a big bone to chew while they are out that keeps mine entertained, you can even get them free from some places....... restaurants, supermarkets, butchers, ....

Pet shop sell them to the one in El Camison used to .... don't know if it there now....

They usually bark for a reason, noise, people walking past boredom.... radio = noise, curtain/blinds= people, boredom = bone ?

Worth a try with a good walk in the morning !!

Aww what a shame,
I do agree with the others in the sense the dog is barking for a reason
Maybe play ball with the dog inside the apartment to tire the dog out
or let it rest of the balcony as the sunshine should relax the dog?
Are you sure there is no possible reason why the dog is barking?

Hmmm....Now I have a dog that I actually got from K9...she is very little and is walked very very very often...ELSE IT IS DONE IN THE HOUSE. BUT she also has some sort of seperation anxiety....!!!!!

So when we leave the house for work or school or anything ....then she barks and yaps all doay long...to which I have had complaints.

SO I am not trying to sound rude or off hand..BUT dogs will bark whether you walk them, play with them, give them toys or not.....The more you put in to your dog...the more they will bark with speration anxiety.

I have had dog trainers round for different things and different dog trainers!!!! Not one of the problems that my dog has has been sorted out. I was getting really very stressed with it, so I spoke to K9 ( where I got her from) and they had no space to take her....SO I PUT UP WITH IT....and so does everyone for the time being anyways.

These places will not take and do not want to take dogs that are homed...Which is fair enough...there are so many if not TO many unwanted dogs out and about without adding more dogs that are homed.

Put up with it.....get it sorted.....muzzle the dog.....that will stop the barking. But of course if the problem goes deeper then you must try and fine a home for it.

As for the original posters dog, its a real shame with this type of situation.
The dog is probably not in the best environment if it is a big dog in an apartment it can hardly move in.

Unfortunately if the dog is barking etc, its unlikely to change and stop suddenly, it may be better off with someone living in a finca, land etc.
Can I ask what type of dog it is? or what it might be crossed with if thats the case?

A suggestion would be for your friend to start basic training again. Leave the dog on its own, but just walk out of the apartment, not actually go out, start for a couple of minutes, however long they feel until the dog begins to bark, then while it is still silent, return to it and give lots of praise etc etc.
Then gradually start to increase the amount of time its left, 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 8 minutes, 10 minutes etc etc.

Unfortunately even if the dog does improve and is able to be left its till the difficult situation of a small apartment for it, but I had a small place for a while with my 2 dogs, 1 of which is a doberman and 1 is a lab X.

Is there anyway your friend could move? If they are renting could they afford a bit more space, if they have a car then they could move out of the tourist area and get a place twice the size for the same money.

Of course, taking the dog out regularly is a must, before going out to work or wherever they must take the dog for a good, and I mean good run, not just lead walking. Is this possible? Can the dog be allowed off? If not there are places which are secure that it couldnt escape from.
This will obviously get the dog very tired so its a good start.

Also your friend could leave the TV on for it, doesnt matter what channel

And yes, if someone could pop in and help out then that would be great.
What a blimmin pity im in the UK at the mo cos Id do my best (no charge) but bad timing it seems.

Also with regards to the canine charities, as has been said, its unlikely that they just didnt want the dog, these places are over spilling with dogs, a lot of whom are just dumped there when no one is about so sometimes they have no choice but to say "no room at the inn" so to speak.
