Hi folks
my name is gary my wife ang and our two children aaron 6yrs and ellie 4 yrs old. We have thought long and hard and have no option but to leave these cold wet windy expensive shores.
seriously, we know Tenerife pretty well and have decided to move lock stock and barrel. We have read all your info on this forum and found it to be very informative. One question I do have though is if we do move how does the politics work if I work overseas/off-shore were I will be working 2 weeks on 2 weeks off, but more importantly we need to know about schools for our children, with them being so young and obviously dont speak spanish. Are the spanish schools english speaking with a spanish curiculm or would it be better to send them to an english school to start with?.
We are looking to move late this year or early next. Does anyone have an e-mail or phone number for an estate agency or rental agency as we want to rent for 6 months first, and with me being away preferably where there are some ex pats.
We are looking to come over sometime in the next 2/3 months to sort as much out as possible, any help would be greatly appreciated and hopefully soon we can be enjoying a beer or two together
regards
gary |

Do you work the rigs????
My friends husbadn works the rigs...he does 4+4 though. Because he lives of the island slighty more than on it...lol...over the 6 months off..he pays taxes locally to the country he works in. which is Egypt.
Your company should be able to inform you a little more.
My children started spanish school at a young age...they didnt speak any spanish at all..apart from Dora the Explorer lol.... They now all speak excellent spanish. They pick it up very very quickly.
I would suggest though that you try and learn some before you arrive...it will be beneficial.
My youngest started spanish school at 3 so you should be able to get your youngest in school aswell.
What area are you thinking about moving to???
Welcome to the forum and best of luck _________________ Find out more at www.myspacetenerife.com

Hi again
yes. i work on rigs but unfortunately i will never get away from this cold as its in the north sea. We were thinking of los christianos to live but really its where we can get property with 2 or 3 beds but still be local to everything.
any recommendations on schools as we think it will probably be a spanish school.
nice to meet people who are living the dream and were counting the months
speak soon |

Hi and welcome to our forum. The most important thing is for ALL of you to start learning Spanish NOW.
Estate agents? Too early, look when you're here and when you've decided where you want to live.
You have to be taxed somewhere so you can declare yourself here then you'll get all the benefits etc.
I can get you an appointment (FOC) with my accountant when you're here in 2/3 months. _________________ .

Welcome to the forum.
You will hear lots of differing opinions on Spanish school and the age your children should be when starting.
Learning from this forum myself here is my opinion.
We moved over when my son was 3 as we did not want to leave it any longer and he started Spanish school straight away. He is very out going and confident and loves school and has picked up the language. Unlike his parents I am embarrassed to say, but we are trying.
If you feel your eldest is a confident and outgoing child then it should not be a problem but i have heard horror stories of children not integrating because of the language barrier and have become very distressed as they just cannot communicate to learn and make friends.
As Rob said learn Spanish and quickly, you have no idea what an advantage it will be with speaking with doctors, teachers, helping your children with their homework and lots more. You will get lots of notes from school and if you cannot translate it can be very difficult, and you cannot afford to mess around with your familys health at the doctors if you do not understand.
I do not want to scare you but I think you should know what I have learnt since being here.
Good luck and stay on board the forum. It is invaluable. It was to me anyhow.

Hi and a belated welcome from me too. Good for you with the Spanish. Keep it up as this will make your kids feel better in a Spanish school (if that's what you decide is best for them) as they will at least understand some of what is going on around them. It will be a lot easier for them to fit in and make friends too. _________________ Who am I? Find out more here: http://www.myspacetenerife.com/index.php?page=view_profile&id=17
I will make this day a happy one for I alone can determine what kind of day it will be. |
