It is a coffee with condensed milk, it looks layered....think it is Canarian, Rob will know probably, I never have any problems ordering them in Canarian places in the Reef I just ask and I get one, used to also get them at the little bar in MAsca too.

You should really ask for ... "Cafe leche leche". It's a small black coffee with condensed milk as well as normal milk. Lovely

we're all learning by experience and in my opinion is the best way. i've made some incredible friends this way. When i go to mainland, they giggle at my canarian slang and then teach me some of theirs! if i can have a good time and learn @ the same, i'm happy. Watching movies has helped me decipher the main differences btw canarian and official. Has anyone tried watching movies in castellano? a concentrated effort in the beginning like a zen meditation to get the jist of it but it started to stick after a little while.

I speak Castellano with a Galician accent so that's how I've written the pronunciation. I think if you are learning Spanish from books / internet then you should learn what I would call "proper" Spanish. Like Lea and Elle say, if you go to mainland Spain they won't understand much Canarian, but the Canarians should understand Castellano.

Jenbray, the letter "J" is pronounced "chota" (if you use the Welsh or Scottish "ch" sound). However in a word it is just pronounced "ch". The "chay" sound is for the letter "G".

I would say always pronounce "v"'s and "b"'s as a "b" as it will sound better than a "v", although with the "v" there is a slight difference.

And ask Funky says, don't worry about the accent too much as most Brits do keep their British accent when speaking a foreign language anyway.

Most people will pick up accents/colloquialisms etc from the Spanish/Canarian people they learn with. For example, I would never say "guagua" for bus, although someone learning from a Canarian would only call it a "guagua". However if I spent a lot more time with Canarians I would probably start missing out the s/z on the end of words.
