I never knew this happened but you learn something every day and recently I managed to capture on camera homosexuality in the Monarch Butterfly. I know they are both males because they have black dots on the wing to show their sex. The smaller male had just hatched out and was drying its wings when a larger male attempted to mate with it. I searched online and found that Wikipedia lists this species of butterfly as known to exhibit homosexual behaviour!

Perhaps that's where the Spanish got the slang word 'Mariposa' for a homosexual?

Thanks, Karl!  Actually no patience needed - I just grabbed my camera and took the shots. I drove the bigger male off after so the other one could finish drying its wings properly.

I think the word you're thinking of is "Mariquita", the word for Ladybird.

I think the word you're thinking of is "Mariquita", the word for Ladybird. |
Er no Jenny, I was definitely thinking of the word "Mariposa". (or you could use "Mariposon", or "Marica" or "Maricon" or "Mariconada" - excuse the lack of accents when I'm typing by the way).
This is probably where we get into another argument as to what slang is used in the Canaries or in the peninsula...

Maybe its from Mexico then. The word is similar enough to Mariposon though (big butterfly). I've definitely heard it used in Malaga and in Majorca though, as at first I was wondering why they were calling people butterflies... 
Lets go with 'Mariposon' from now on then. The ones in Bard's photos are certainly large enough to qualify and apparently they're gay too...

When the term mariposa is used to describe someone it means that they flit from one thing to another and also applies to promiscuous people, gay or straight who cannot be satisfied with just one partner.

Thanks for the clarification Rob. That would perhaps explain the context in which I heard the word used. On both occasions it was used to describe someone acting in an overtly camp and flirtatious manner.
Hopefully my original use of the word has now been vindicated by the language police...

I am surprised Steven that monarchs in Tenerife should behave in this shameful way. In the Royal Pavilion at Brighton maybe, but not in Tenerife.
