A quick poll if I may?

For the ex-pats or regular visitors among you, would most of you prefer that professional offices in Tenerife (lawyers, accountants, estate agents) adhered to typical English opening hours 9am - 5pm etc) or would you prefer typical Spanish hours (e.g. 10am-1pm and then 4pm-7pm)

I'm getting differing views on this, so I would love to know what the majority think.

I would personally choose the Spanish hours. I would say that very few tourists and expats get out and about before 10am and then of an afternoon, most will either be working or on the beach etc. Everyone goes out walking or to the shops late afternoon or early evening, so it just seems like a better time to open. But that's just my view.

I would agree with that in part...BUT personally I hate the spanish hours. I always forget that places close at 1pm or 2pm...this is annoying lol as i normally go looking for things around this time after work...then by the time they re-open at 4pm I have the children home from school and it is a hassel.

English hours work for me...lol....9am til 5pm.. or even 10am til 6pm lol...but that is just my opinion... Embarassed

EDIT:...just voted Embarassed Embarassed ..

I'm also for Spanish hours as I am at home cooking and eating lunch between 2 and 4pm.

However if your clientele are gong to be mostly Brits then you could follow British opening hours as, like Stripps, people who have just moved here (or are here on holiday) may well forget about places closing at 1.30/2pm. The 10am to 6pm is a good idea as I agree many people here are not up earlier unless they are on their way to work!

Just a note - typical Spanish hours would be 10am - 1.30/2pm then 4/5pm - 8 /9pm. Not so good if you or your staff want a British social life!!

Thanks for the votes and comments everyone. Ironically, the comments probably give me a better idea than the voting does.

I'm surprised that only 9 people voted though (the 10th was me, as I had to vote myself before I could see the results). Without mine, it still seems to be in favour of Spanish hours so far.

However, all the non-regulars to Tenerife are welcome and indeed encouraged to vote. Your opinion is equally if not more important because most clients visiting lawyers and estate agents are new arrivals and perhaps still geared to the English way of life at the point they arrive.

I am a bit like Stripps keep forgetting the Spanish hours, and have wasted many excursions at the wrong time) although saying that many places also work the English hours. But to be honest the longer we are here the more we get used to Spanish hours.

Whatever hours you chose as long as they are advertised I am sure you will be OK. Also must admit it tends to vary from area to area. Tourist areas open all hours, villages etc keep Spanish hours. Am sure you will make the right decision though

Cheers
Sunny

When I'm at work i cant contact any body or do any business in work time as i don't work in an office environment, so having the opportunity to contact a solicitor later then 5.00 would be great.

What came as a surprise to me when i collected the deeds to my apartment from a solicitor in los chris was being told the opening hours and i could just drop in at my convenience to signe for them, So much more relaxed then the British way.

The only problem i had was the spanish reluctance to answer a question by e mail in the same week.

I agree with Funky and voted accordingly!

Thank you all for your valuable feedback. That's given me lots of food for thought.

There seem to be other logistical problems with running strict Spanish hours, not least that we also cover English legal work, for which we may be contacted by other parties in England during U.K. working hours.

One compromise may be to open a little later in the morning (say 10am) and work through till 6pm or 6.30pm. It seems that few people in Tenerife want to visit a lawyer at the crack of dawn, plus the later opening allows others who work till 5 or 5.30pm a chance to pop in before closing.
