Post Post subject: Working & Studying / Volunteering - Counselling? Reply with quote

Hi,
My name is Jenny and I'm 20 years old and moving to Tenerife (Amarilla Golf & CountryClub) with my partner within the next month or so. My plan at the moment is to study part-time or in my own time to become a fully qualified counsellor so in the future I can work part-time at home or with a company. However I am finding it incredibly difficult to find any information that will help me or point me in the right direction of how I can go about this!
As mentioned in my subject I would be happy to do any volunteering work to get myself experience not only to learn basic skills and to modify skills I have learnt/already gain. But to also see if I enjoy the challagenes and negative sides of the job.
Is it even possible to persue this career in Tenerife? And if yes, does anyone have any advice to share? Or to point me in the right direction. At that moment any informarion big or small would lighten my situation. Smile

Thank you in advance, Jenny.

Not sure about the eductaion side of thing here...Britannia in Los Cristianos do a limited amoun of courses, but I am not sure that counselling is one of them.

On the other hand I do know of a re-hab center that is always in need of help. Maybe you could do some voluntary work up there. I will have a chat with the people who run it and see if they are willing to have you.

You should like Amarilla Golf....I live there lol

Hi Jenny and welcome to the forum. Nice name btw!!

Do you speak Spanish? You will be very limited with choices if you don't, especially regarding studying and even with work. I think Britannia is the only place where they do adult-education of any sort in English. Perhaps you can do a distance learning course from the UK but whether it will be recognized over here is another question. Perhaps it would be a good idea to do some volunteering work first and get to know the counselors and find out how they've gone about it.

If you do speak Spanish then you can go to the Unemployment office where they have details of courses available in Tenerife. Or alternatively, the University in La Laguna.

Unfortuntaly my Spanish is very limited at the moment **blush**. What with my incapabality of doing rolling R's.

My mother-in-law works at Britannia, which I never even considered would be an option for myself. But I shall talk to her about it and see if any of the courses are of any interest to myself. Thank you for pointing out most probably the most obvious path to me Razz

As for the volunteering sides of things, I would very much enjoy to do it. What with so many organisations in the Uk to join is their any in Tenereife?

I have looked into doing a distant learning course from the UK, but would much prefer to do one thats on the island itself. As Iam worried as you mentioned that it will not be recognized.

Bad enough living in UK making life long career decisions and succeding at them, at my age. I just had to make it a little more difficult for myself. Very Happy

Strippersrus - Thank you for looking into that for me. I don't know if the re-hab center you mentioned will take a english speaker, because to be honest my Spanish is well... funny to say the least. Amarilla Golf <3

Haven't even moved yet and can see how helpful and friendly people are. Compared to where Iam. Just counting down the days till I'm out of the 'rat race' and can enjoy a more laid back life style.

The re-hab center is English....lol I wouldnt have suggested a Spanish one because I thought you probably didnt have much language as you didnt mention it in your post....

It is in Granadilla...which is just up the mountain a liitle and deals with Alcoholics and people who are homeless and come out of hospital and stuff like that...
