Post Post subject: More questions from us!!! Reply with quote

Hi guys,
As you may know we are moving over next June, My parents have now decided that they are going to (semi) retire to tenerife, (they had planned to tour around mainland spain for 6 months and hopefully find somewhere to settle, their plans have now changed, and they need some info.
I have tried to find it on the forum, but to no avail.
They intend to work(part time probably) for probably another 10 years once they get there, they are 52.
My dad is an ex fireman and now working as a school janitor. (He had to take early reitrement from fire service due to health issues which are now resolved). He has done a course on swiming pool maintenance and cleaning.
My mum works in the credit industry, and would be looking for a job perhaps in sales to tourists of some sort or failing that cleaning or waitressing.

1. Would there state pension from the uk, be transferrable, once they reach pensionable age, or how does this work - basically would they get a pension?

2. If they were both working say part time would they be paying enough social to get the health care benefits?

3. They have a large american caravan called a "fifth wheel" - which can only be towed with a pick up truck.
I have advised them of the cost of bringing their pick up truck over, so they are now in a quandry - how to get the fifth wheel over? - They would be better I feel selling their truck here, and purchasing another one over there - are they easy to get? How expensive are they? Perhaps if they are very expensive they will amatricate teirs onto spanish plates - that would let them drive over with the fifith wheel.

4. Does anyone know of any companies that would ship such an item - it is probably a good bit smaller than a residential caravan (I think it is 28 ft long).

5. Somewhere to store it, once it is here?

6. Would they need to pay any sort of import tax on the fifth wheel?

They intend to keep it as, they will be taking time out to tour mainland spain for long holiays, but they would not be living in it when they are in Tenerife although they may do initially, (if they can find a caravan park to pitch it on ) whilst looking for an apartment to buy.

What do you think guys any info on any of the above shall be much appreciated. Smile

Thanks for reading, if you've got this far - I do go on a bit, apparently I'm worse in person!!

Hi Margaret - That is one of their options, but it will depend how much it's going to cost them to get their truck over........apparantly you get charged 23% of the value of the vehicle, when you import it....it is a relatively new truck, so 23% of the value could be a big bill! (plus the cost of marticulating the plates.....£1000 or thereabouts from what I have read) They would need to weigh it up against the cost of an equivalent truck in Tenerife, and how available they are to purchase.

Thanks for your help Margaret, any advice is more than welcome!!!

RE Pensions...
I go abroad for 12 months or permanently
We can pay your State Pension straight into your overseas account in some countries.

If this is not possible or if you prefer, we can pay your State Pension into a UK account or we can send a cheque (in sterling) at the end of every 4 or 13 weeks. We can send this straight to you, your overseas bank or someone else outside the UK chosen by you.

If you are away for less than two years we can pay your State Pension as a lump sum when you return to the UK.

If your State Pension is £5 a week or less and is paid once a year, we will continue to pay it in this way while you are abroad.

Your first payment after you leave the UK may be delayed, but we will make every effort to keep any delay as short as possible.

Special arrangements may have to be made if you need payments made to Pakistan, India or Bangladesh.

You can continue to get your State Pension anywhere in the world, but in some countries you may not be able to get an increase in your State Pension for your dependants or the yearly increase in your payments. Contact The Pension Service before you go abroad.

Details in link.

http://www.thepensionservice.gov.uk/atoz/atozdetailed/retirement.asp

Also if you do a search on here for state pension....and tick search for all terms...theres a couple of threads that covered this lightly before..

RE social paymenets here.

If they are working like you or I and have a contratc then the payments will cover them for health care. Or if they have a Autonomo social, it will be the same as the previous information given to you ....for you ..lol

As for the 'fifth wheel' I can't realy help. It seems very large to ship across on the ferry. My husband drove our car over a few years ago....there are threads about this on here. It does seem that it may cost a lot of money to that for this size of caravan.

Maybe someone else could help on this one... Confused

Yes it will be very expensive and a lot of hassle to matriculate their truck AND their fiver in Tenerife. They are not sold here. Trailers, caravans and boats are also matriculated here.

There's even a forum for 13 and under on here although its not very often used nowadays.

Aaw that would be great for her to speak to them, it might give her more confidence abut going to a spanish school. A lot of the kids in her class are giving her a hard time saying it will be rubbish living in Tenerife and she'll have no friends (little horrors Evil or Very Mad )!! jealousy is a terrible thing.
I'll get her on tomorrow, as I am singing in a holiday park tonight, and she is coming with me.

Yes, just tell her to reply - "If you are horrible to me I won't invite you out there on holiday". That should shut them up!
