Hi to all, sorry not posted in a while, really busy Training up the new owner of our business.
I am sure this has come up many times as a question about schools, but here go's.
We have a son aged fourteen, who is not the brightest spark in the world, and thinks only about his Playstation 3 ( get the picture ) Due to Funding, we would like him to go to a Spanish High School. We are a little afraid because of his age, he will not pick up the Language, and fall behind in school.
If needed we could pay Private, but would like to know if anyone has put their teenager, into a Spanish school and they have done OK.
Hope to start and post more after this week, had a lot to do. It's a lot more stressful moving from the USA, than it was moving from the UK, and to do it all again. I must be crazy
Any way hope to hear from someone soon Tammy. |

As you admit that he's lazy, I would say that he'll have no chance in a Spanish school. Even if he was bright and a worker he'd really struggle at that age. _________________ .

I would not put him in Spanish School at that age without the language.
He would have no chance and if it is important to you that he settles over here you would not be doing yourself any favours, in the short or long term. _________________ Need a cleaner in South Tenerife ? Cleaning just got better... www.maid4tenerife.com

I'm afraid I have to totally agree with Karl and Rob.
At 14 they are just taking their options for their exam years. To then go and learn another language will complicate things more.
If he was 12 and academic...then I would say yes. But you say he would rather play with his PS than do much else....so with that in mind then I would have to strongly advise Wingate school. The fees are not overly expensive...about 4000 euros a year...You can pay mothly termly or yearly I believe.
I hope this has helped. _________________ Find out more at www.myspacetenerife.com

Thank's for the replies. I had a feeling he would not cope. At least I know before hand.

You say you didn't think he'd cope, but do you think he'll study if you pay for him to have a private education? Sounds like he may not. Don't mean to sound harsh but I wouldn't want to pay for my son's education, especially if I knew he would not study I know someone who did and he never went to school so in the end the parent's stopped sending him.
I suppose at least in an English speaking school he is more likely to make friends and therefore settle in to living here but if you will be living in a touristy area then there will be plenty of English speaking children around. _________________ Who am I? Hi Jenny.Yes you are right but I don't have any other Option but to pay Private.
My other problem with him is, he has had four years of schooling in America. The Math is done totally different to the UK.
English is totally different, they call it American English so their spelling of certain words are different to the UK, as in the word Colour in the USA they spell it Color and so on.
They History is obviously different and may I add the American History Teachers all say that they won World war two and not the British, which my Kids beg to differ
I am on the other hand happy he will have a English Education. His eldest Sister Graduates on the 31st of May and all she will have, is what they call a High School Diploma. I don't know how this will go down in the UK or Europe for her to get a Job, as she has no GCSE. I am hoping her having a American Education will be a good talking point at Job interviews for her and she gets a Job that way. Other wise her Diploma means nothing over there.
Thanks for the replies you all have been very helpful.
Tammy.
PS: I have another school Question to ask will post it sometime today. |

I would imagine that an American high school diploma will be similar to one here. A lot will depend on her career choice. _________________ .

Funny that you should say the maths is done differently in America than in the UK...I have found the same with the spanish system of maths..
My daughter had a bit of a hard time with Division here...I was no use to her as I was using the system I was taught in UK many years ago lol
She now has the grasp as we have a spanish friend who is also a teacher, so he helped her out and has shown her how to do it...Thank goodness lol _________________ Find out more at www.myspacetenerife.com

I was Hoping for her to Go the Marine Park you have over there, to see wether her Grade with Honors would get her a job.
Thank's for that Tammy. |

The last time that there was a vacancy in the Marine park there were thousands of applicants...... on an island with around 800,000 inhabitants! Don't let her get her hopes up. _________________ .
