Post subject: Maternity nurse and consultant advice please |
|
|
Hello all.
I am wanting to move to Tenerife. I have been there 5 times in the last 7 months and have fallen completley head over heels.
I am a nightly maternity nurse and basically help families to get thir babies into a good routine and sleeping through the night.
I also offer private consultations for families who want to achieve this themselves.
I read an artical in one of the local newspapers the last time i was there and it said that there is no after birth care once leaving hospital so i thought, maybe, possibly i could introduce my service over there.
What are your thoughts on this?
I have also been a nanny in the UK for 12 years and would look into doing that again.
HELPPPPPPPPP!!
Thank you,
Lisa

Hi and welcome to the forum.
I suppose the first and most obvious question would be, do you speak spanish?
I dont have kids myself but this may well be something that the expats would be interested in which would mean obviously to convers with them you wouldnt need spanish, but you would to speak with other proffessionals, doctors, farmacias, etc etc.
A few of the members on here have young children so they would be better at answering your querie.
Presumably you are fully qualified etc
Would you want to work from a surgery or private?
A friend of mine and herm other who is a nurse have opened a clinic in fanabe about a year ago and they offer things like weightloss, councilling (I believe), and I think they have a clinic for babies so this could be the sort of place you could work from.....

Hi apollo and thank you for your reply.
I am currently 'trying' to learn spanish but very slowly
Yes i am qualified and have done additional courses- colic, reflux and breastfeeding support and have got a full cv with many many references.
I would love to get some more feedback because i would love for this to work and to be able to help families there. | apollo wrote: | Hi and welcome to the forum.

| Ideally i would like to work privatley but would be happy to do consultations for families with newborns/toddlers who are having sleep problems and to divise a routine for them to follow that works well for them as a family. |

I would suggest that you make a much bigger effort to learn Spanish, I can't imagine that there are many expats who could afford your services, there are far more wealthy child bearing age local women than expats. _________________ .

I spoke to a friend of mine who lives out in Tenerife last night and she said that it might be a good idea to start a babysitting and nanny service as there is nothing like that over there at the moment.
She advised to go around all the large hotels with details etc of what i can offer.
What are your views on this ... do you think there would be demand for this?
Thanks,

It has been tried several times before. Hotels will not recommend any clients to put their children into a strangers care. Some hotels do have their own babysitting service. _________________ .

Sorry about that, you need to bear in mind that because of the hundreds of thousands of people that have tried or are trying to come here it's millions to one against that your bright idea has not been thought of and tried before. Keep trying though if you want to make it. There's nothing to stop you setting up an evening 'guarderia'..... if you have the capital and think that you can make it work. _________________ .

People don't get much in child benefits here. Foreigners who are not registered in the system won't get anything so when they have a baby they will have probably had to give up a job and therefore have less money. I'm not saying that all will be like this and there may be those who can afford it. I know I would have liked this kind of help after having my son, especially as my mum wasn't here to help but not sure if I could have afforded it, and certainly this time around I won't be able to.
I also highly recommend learning Spanish. It gives you the advantage over the thousands of others who move here who don't speak it. It will also make your life a lot easier if you can speak at least the basics. Plus it will open up the Spanish market to you as well as the English. Perhaps some rich Spanish parents would like an English speaking nanny. _________________ Who am I? Find out more here: http://www.myspacetenerife.com/index.php?page=view_profile&id=17
