Post Post subject: San Juan Reply with quote

This year I made an effort to get involved in the San Juan celebrations here and on Sunday I was dancing along with a crowd of people by a stage set up on the seafront here to a guy belting out Spanish songs over backing tracks. And they were giving out salami and other meat tapas but I don't eat meat, and pop and cola and I don't drink that. I did enjoy the dancing though! lol

Last night I went to the San Juan night party here on the beach and it was amazing - thousands of people arrived in cars and some others in a procession. Samba bands with all sorts of percussion, pyrotechnics and fire dancers, men dressed as Guanches with face paint and blowing conches, loads of teenagers and kids bathing in the sea, a disco area on the beach, a fire floating on the sea, fires on the cliffs, people carrying lit torches, stalls at the side of the road selling jewelry, handbags, belts and toys.

I think a lot of them stayed there all night.

I didn't hear one British voice the whole time and I think I was the only Brit there. There are celebrations still going now and I can hear more loud fireworks.

Anyway here are some pics from last night.

It was difficult to get good photos because it was in the dark and a lot failed.

Are there many Brits in San Marcos?

San Juan is a very popular festival all over Spain and great fun to get involved. In years gone by we've had a fire on the beach and barbecued sardines/whatever we had on it! Each family/group have their own fire and party with everyone around enjoying themselves too.

I will make this day a happy one for I alone can determine what kind of day it will be.

Not many Brits here, no, and the ones that are mostly go to the same restaurant and bar. It varies though because most of them are tourists renting short term here and a few have apartments they own but are only here for holidays. It's normal to find a few on a bus though and at a restaurant but I heard none in the space of about three hours. I don't know where they all vanished to or where all the Spanish people came from!

Thanks for the article and the photos Bard.
The photos you did manage to get are very good.

Sounds quite a festival from what both you and Jenny have said about it.
