Post subject: My experience - Livng in Tenerife |

Hello Everyone
As you may have heard I've come back to the UK, it took a lot of thought but i feel for the moment it was the best decision I've made and I'd like to share my story with you, and especially if people are thinking of doing what i did, you could learn from my mistakes.
I love Tenerife, i love the fact its hot, that everyone there is friendly and that i feel safe there.
I did a lot of research for about 6 months before i did the big move, but all the advice in the world doesn't matter, its what you choose to do, how one person manages their stay out there is different to how others do it.
I went with a company called Playaway, I can't fault them, they are brilliant, I went on my own and I've made over 50 friends from them and they made me feel settled and also made me feel like i was making the best choice in my life.
I found Tenerife very quiet for the time of year i went, i was looking for work in either a restaurant or hotel but when i went in April it was so quiet and i couldn't find work, only as A PR or as a jelly shot girl, this was not a guaranteed wage and i didn't want to work 8 hours a day for 2 euro!! As i wanted to go to Tenerife to stay i thought I'd try very hard to find a job as to which i wanted, I'd walk everyday, from where the Sunday market is held in Los Cristianos, all the way down to Fanabe beach, all around San Eugenio ( cant spell it lol ) and all in Torviscas ( cant spell that either lol ). I couldn't find anything, I had all my NIE sorted and walked over 5 hours a day looking for work for 40 + constantly, but had no joy, i was offered a PR job but only made 2 euro as it was DEAD !!!
I found it easy to find accommodation, On a major travel agents website either the columbus hotel or Piramides Apts was between 25 - 30 pounds a week each based on 2 people which is very good !!!
I used to go out every night because i found myself sad from not finding work in the day.. This is something i do not recommend as i spent most my money on nights out and eating out, trust me this is something i regret.
I decided to come home, mainly because i wanted to make more money and try again, i thought of going travelling as at one point i thought i may have not just been ready to settle, but i feel i am ready, but financially i need to save and now i know what to expect.
I will be back one day......
If anyone can learn anything from me its that you need to snap out of holiday mode as soon as you land.. i didn't it took me a good month to actually treat Tenerife life a possible place for home.
So if anyone is going out please please learn from me
SAVE!!!
Don't expect a dream job straight away unless you're very lucky, and even though its picking up now when its quiet ITS QUIET !!..
I know some people will read this and disagree, but everyones experiences are different and i just wanted to view mine.
I did have a fantastic time and anyone on my face book can see that from my pictures!!!
I have learned and i will be back THATS A PROMISE !!!

Claire, it is often said on this forum, "Let us know how you got on" and you most certainly did. Thank you for that honest precis of your life in the south of Tenerife. I am only sorry that it didn't work out for you, especially with all the effort that you put in to it.
You say that you will be back, and I really believe that you will. I wish you well back in the UK. Don't forget us on this forum as many users will want to know that you are well and how you are progressing.
Good luck and take care. _________________ Don't follow the 'MySpaceTenerife' link under my avatar because you will learn nothing about me.

I'm sorry it didn't work out for you and also grateful that you returned and wrote about why it didn't work out for you. This sort of information is important for people who are thinking about moving here and I'm sure we will refer people to your post over and over again. Thanks and good luck with whatever you decide. _________________ Who am I? Find out more here: http://www.myspacetenerife.com/index.php?page=view_profile&id=17

| That's a very informative post and I am sorry it didn't work out but at least you gave it a go. I went last year and only stayed three weeks as I was spending too much money and realised the only thing available was PRing which is not for me. Save and learn Spanish and you will be back. x |

Well you tried it, made mistakes, knew what they were, admitted them, told us and moved on, nothing wrong with that and you can come back when the time is right if YOU want.
You came by yourself i dont think i would ever have the nerve to do that, i admire you for giving it a go.
Good luck to you and im sure you will find what your looking for. |

I'll add my thanks for posting to all the others. I'm still mystified as to why you never let me have your CV after speaking on the phone when I had a job offer for you. _________________ .

I did actually send it about half hour after getting off the phone to you. I was a bit mystified myself as to why i never heard back from you. Must be my fat fingers sending to a wrong address. Ill have to look into it rob _________________ www.myspace.com/claire_the_babe

Lesson.....
If you've applied for a job and heard nothing ...... ring them and say " Sorry to trouble you but did you get my CV?"
The worst thing that can happen is that they say "yes but I'm not interested". If they're not sure that you're the right person for the job the fact that you've bothered to ring means that you want the job, brownie points for you! You don't get shot for being keen. _________________ .

Good points, Rob. Certainly one of the best resources a person could have when moving to a new land is a forum like this. The book being mentioned elsewhere sounds good, too.
I get the feeling of a diverse, caring online community. Haven't seen it all, yet, of course. But the thought and interest shown are good to see. |
