No tarantulas here and no very big spiders really. There is a Black Widow - Latrodectus mactans - but I have not seen one nor heard of any reports of it.
One scorpion - Centruroides nigrescens - said to be introduced and living in the Santa Cruz area.
A giant centipede - Scolopendra morsitans - lives here but I've not seen one yet.
There are many beetle species, although you will have to look hard to find most of them. Often turning over stones here reveals nothing because it is too hot. Damper areas are more productive for range of species so forests, mountains and the north are better hunting grounds than the dry coastal areas of the south in my opinion.
There are several water beetles on Tenerife.
Spiders are all over the island though.
I personally think there are species here yet to be discovered because there's not much interest shown in nature here and a lot of the island gets few visitors anyway.
Good luck! _________________ Find out more about me here: http://www.myspacetenerife.com/index.php?page=view_profile&id=10 |

I had the same problem. I found that erasing the brackets etc. and just leaving the naked link solved the problem. _________________ Don't follow the 'MySpaceTenerife' link under my avatar because you will learn nothing about me.

Bardofely, Thanks for that, I'll certainly be looking out for any scolopendra, however, the wife might moan about me collecting any, they have a VERY nasty bite. The laws over here forbid the importing of mactans, they are classed as a DWA (Dangerous Wild Animal).
Beetles however...
I have a few species here so might be tempted to rummage through the leaf litter for a while.
We are coming over to Playa da las Americas in November so I'm hoping it'll be the right time of year, not too hot and near enough to somewhere with flaura/ fauna.
Cheers. |

I can't say that I'm a fan of spiders but these do look rather cute. I think I will stay with just looking at the photos though. _________________ .
