Appealing once again for transport to Los Cris from Palm Mar, prepared to share expenses for a lift to Los Cristianos Amandas job starts at 2 p.m so any time from 1.00 upto about 1.45 would be great. Also need to mention that this would only be required every other week as she works alernate shifts on a weekly basis.

Please can someone help?????

I guess no-one in that area goes to Los Cristianos at that time. I go past but at 9am in the morning so no good to her. Can I suggest you put notices up in the local shops/bars.

Hi Andy, think you may have a bit of problem, maybe moving to Palm Mar without having transport for Amanda was not a great idea, as obviously no buses here only taxi's. The only other alternative is to walk up to the main (guaza) road and get a bus from there to LC. Why not try putting a notice up in the English Corner Shop here!!

I have not yet moved to Tenerife and don't know the local customs.

Reading this thread, I wonder if hitchhiking is considered 'socially acceptable' and relatively safe.

It is how my wife and I got transportation several times in America, Hawaii and New Zealand. We used creative ways to compensate people for the ride.

But, we were two. Certainly it is less safe for a woman to hitchhike alone.

Perhaps, though, if hitchhiking is viable, both of you could attempt to hitch on the road and when you get a good ride become acquainted with the driver until there is a good feeling to ask for regular rides for Amanda.

That should be no less safe than posting on boards, which can also be fruitful. The advantage of hitching together is you will meet people who are traveling the route, possibly on a regular basis.

I have an ulterior motive for posting this, as it would be interesting to know the culture on hitching before we move there in October.

Best of luck.

Oops. I just noticed the date on Andy's post, 2007.

Well, I am interested to know how it turned out for you, Andy and Amanda.

And interested to know the acceptability of hitching on the island.

Hitching used to be very popular and it was easy to get lifts. Its rare to see hitchhikers nowadays. I wouldn't stop and pick up a couple....

only 1 spare seat in my car. Wink

Yeah, that was a nice thing about Hawaii. Lots of pick-ups. People would just motion to us to jump in the back.

Before flying to New Zealand, I wrote a poem about the country and printed it on cards. We gave it to people who gave us rides. We got emails from some who said they still had the poem on their dashboard and read it from time to time.

As a female I would not pick up anyone hitchhiking. I do see a few now and again but it is not common, at least not the routes I travel in the south.

I have not seen many apart from the cyclists who do it as a sport- There are cycling races that hold up the traffic here.

Scooters and motorbikes are popular.
