There are many species of bromeilad growing at El Botanico in Puerto de la Cruz and the pineapple is probably the best known species of this family. Here is the flower of one species which was in bloom. Water accumulates in the centre and some types are known as Vase plants because of this and there are even species that have enough water in them for the tadpoles of specialised frogs to develop in them, although there are none here!

I love those colours. It looks like a huge plant - how big is it?

I will make this day a happy one for I alone can determine what kind of day it will be.

It's in a magnified closeup there but the plant is probably about 2 ft across.

To put it in perspective, how big is that one flower roughly?

The green flowering part is about one and a half to two inches across I'd estimate.

Absolutely fantastic close up then. Great job with the photography.

I really enjoy your Flora and Fauna postings and your Northern Tenerife villages / Fiestas and the like.

Thanks Bard, your enthusiasm in these matters is second to none I've met Smile and I love the little insights into these things that otherwise I would never get to see.

Thanks, Andy! An American friend said it's a wonder I haven't been employed by the Tenerife tourist board!
