Post Post subject: New Bank Charge Reply with quote

Just to let you all know about a new bank charge which has come into force for non-residents.

We have a non-residents current with Caja Canarias which we opened at the Callao Salvaje branch in February of this year, which we operate on line “caja en casa”.

I was shocked to find a charge of €9,45 EACH, deducted from our account on 26/06/08, this was listed as “Peticion de certificado – comision certificado no residencia”

We did not have to understand Spanish to realise this was a charge because we are not residents, I e-mailed the branch to ask about this as we understood that the bank charges would just be 90 cents per month to maintain the account.

The manager there is a very nice lady called Catalina Adriana Solano Barroso who speaks excellent English. When we opened the account she told us that should we have queries to just e-mail her personally and she replied the same day as follows: -

Quote:
This is the commission for the Non Resident Certificate that we are obliged to order by the Police.
We must order it when the account is opened and then every two years, for each account holder, to confirm that this client is non resident.
That is a new law (for all the banks here in Spain), when you opened the account we did not charge anything, and I could not advice you about that.

Hopefully we will be residents before the next charge would be due in 2 years time!!! Anxious Anxious Anxious

Am I reading this right Mary, that you haven't applied for residentia? This doesn't apply if you have 'residentia?'

You cannot apply for residencia if you don't live here and therefore cannot have a residents account. If you do live here you are not supposed to have a non-residents account.

Hi Seagull & Hi Rob,

Thank you both for replying.

Rob, that is what we understood. We cannot apply for residencia until we live in Tenerife and have a Tenerife address.

We opened the account so that we could have enough money to at least put a holding amount on a property when we are ready to purchase / or arrange to start paying on a rental if we decide to go that route.

Catalina advised the non-residents "caja en casa" account and told us that we will have to change to a residents account when we move over.

She also advised us not to have a savings account until we become residents as the interest rates are not good for non-residents. She will discuss savings accounts with us when we have our residencias.

She was very helpful to us but obviously this new "law" has come into being since we opened the account.

I thought I would post the information so anyone else thinking of having a non-residents account was aware of the new charge.

Thank you Mary, we appreciate your help. I was just trying to confirm the differences in bank accounts and why.

Thanks for confirming that Mary. Mrs Seagull has been tearing her hair out recently with the exchange rate, a big drop in the value of our investments and the raging inflation here in Tenerife.

Me? I let her deal with it and I accept as much pocket money as she can afford to give me. You see we have this arrangement - What's mine is hers and what's hers is her own.

The same happened to us to be fair and there were additional charges every 6 months but I cant moan because its a much safer way of looking after your money. I was with Santander and I never had any problems with them, well none that they didnt sort for me Smile A nice guy working in the Santander in Las Americas near the Monkey Beach bar spoke great english and always helped me with anything I didnt understand or needed answers to.
