Amazing photos thanks for posting them.

Thanks for telling me about Photo Bucket and how to insert an image!

I wondered how to do it when visiting various boards over the past months. This is the first that I have focused on it, and it is great to now have this tool.

I can post more photos over time, but don't want to overdo it.

BTW, you mentioned your sons earlier. If you like to say, how old are they?

Vision River, you are responsible for my first song at karaoke next Thursday. I'll be a little nervous because a dear friend who usually conducts the proceedings sadly passed away recently, and his widow who has been carrying on in his absence is having a well earned break. I'll be keeping it going until the lady returns. My first song? "I lost my heart . . . . " I just can't get it out of mind since your post.

By the way in one of your photos you can see the top of the hotel that we stayed in. It's the building with the pointed peak - the street's name began with a 'K'.

When I lived in Hong Kong for 6 years you could walk around at any time of the day or night. I never had any problems and felt very safe.

Karl, what were you doing in Hong Kong? Were you at school with your parents working there; or perhaps an older student; or did you actually have a job there? Whatever the answer, a magnificent experience for you.

We stopped off there for three nights on the way to New Zealand. I admit that I wasn't looking forward to it because of its reputation for being very busy. By the time we left I wished that we had spent more nights there. I loved it.

I loved the walkways above the traffic; the Star Ferry; the little quiet green areas off of the long shopping street that you come to as soon as you get off of the ferry; the riverside walk near the new airport (they were building it when we were there;) and Hong Kong at night is so vibrant - and I endorse your comment on how safe it is.

How was your Cantonese when you were there, and did you sound the right tones? I suppose it will not be used at all in a few generations, now that Hong Kong has come under Chinese rule. I suspect that the only language spoken will be Mandarin.

Did you get over to Yosemite Park?

We stayed in a canvas cabin for a couple of nights in the heart of Yosemite. Like all of the USA's national parks that we have visited, it was truly beautiful.

Yellowstone was an unforgettable experience too. We had flown from Vegas to Billings in Montana where we collected another hire car. I knew that the distance between Billings and Old Faithful Lodge was around two hundred miles, but what the map didn't indicate when I planned the trip was that the terrain was mountainous. We arrived at the lodge in the early hours of the morning, with me peering through the sulphur mists that were swirling across the road. The Geyser was awesome, though.

Yes, Hong Kong was certainly a culture shock when I first arrived. I went over there as a DJ and stayed for 6 years lol Did some traveling as well and met my wife Clare in the club I worked in.

My brother was already there and I remember the first thing that struck me were the smells on every small street. They were all different, some very good and some very bad !!! I stayed on my brothers floor in the ROOM he renting for a while. Probably about a 60 square metre apt split into about 6 bedrooms with a tiny lounge and a tiny kitchen. And some of the bedrooms had double bunk beds in, I think there were about 14 people staying there.

A very very busy and full on place, not somewhere I could live and settle but I would like to go back and visit again someday.

Tenerife Seagull,

If we were in the area, I'd be in the audience when you sing!

Good that the widow is taking a break.

There is often a feeling of loss with the passing of a friend.

You'll do well with "I left my heart in San Francisco."

My association with the song began when I was a guest in an English class in a German village. The adult students suggested I present my photos and poems in a public presentation. I put it together in two segments. The first was of Hawaii and California and ended before the break with slides of San Francisco and the song.

Cool that you recognized the building from my photo.

Best of luck to you in the karaoke!

Post Post subject: Ben and Grizzly Adams Reply with quote

Karl,

I don't know about Ben or Grizzly Adams, but have a story about a log cabin in the Rockies!

As a high school senior, I was on the staff of the school newsletter, Spilled Ink. Our English teacher knew of my interest in the Eastern world view and arranged for me to interview Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the founder of Transcendental Meditation and guru of the Beatles.

Three other students and I drove up into the mountains on a snowy winter day, to a log cabin in a meadow in Rocky Mountain National Park.

We sat across a coffee table from Maharishi and I interviewed him.

He was in a white robe which flowed to his ankles, and his black beard streaked with white was set against his dark brown skin. He spoke in a melodious voice about bliss and mantras. I asked him about such things as the mantras I had learned from Japanese and Tibetan Buddhism.

Outside, through the picture window, we could see large snowflakes falling onto the pine trees.
