Karl,

Visited your post from Rob's nomination and link. I agree with Rob, it is an excellent post with sound advice.

I was a business brokerage agent in Atlanta. We used the figure of 80 / 20.

Eighty percent of new businesses would fail within two years, as I recall from those long ago days. After a certain time period, the chances of survival became much higher. Possibly it was, "If you make it past the five year mark, you have an eighty percent chance of surviving longer term as a business."

Our office was part of a nationwide chain, and the statistics showed such figures and the reasons for failure as mis-management and being under-capitalized.

Business partnership break-ups were a common reason for us to get a listing. We described business partnership as "a marriage without love."

That is good advice for life in general as well!

Who the hell can afford to eat their main meals in reataurants almost every day of the week?? It sounds like a real bummer that you've had to cut back to eating out only once or twice a week like the million or so other residents on the island, Spanish and English. I feel for you Seagull, I really do. Shocked

We would also visit bars five or six nights a week -we now limit that to one night a week...

Out drinking 5 or 6 nights a week? I'm not even going to start on the social or health implications of such an astonishing admission. And again, I gutted for you that you've had to cut back to once a week like everyone else here. No wonder your local bars appear to be struggling. They must be sending you 'get well soon' cards daily..... Laughing

Although we are residents of Tenerife our pensions are paid in pounds, and I think that our situation is a reflection of most people in the UK.

Yes, once again dynamite observation powers from Seagull. Most people in the UK are indeed paid in pounds. Can't believe I never noticed it before.

Sorry Seagull, but your post tickled me so much I couldn't resist. How on earth do you come up with these gems time and time again?

Yes, business in Tenerife is down. Only an idiot would deny that. However, its also a fact that the so called recent 'boom years' here were nothing more than overindulgence by credit-happy Brits. The fallout has been a glut of newbuild property at hyperinflated prices and a dearth of run of the mill British bars and restaurants that I'm quite astonished were able to even make a profit back in the boom days.

British trade will continue to decline as more and more Brits wake up to the fact that their country is financially and morally bankrupt and is going to get a whole lot worse before it gets better.

What will this mean for Tenerife? Further drops in the number of bars and restaurants, further drops in property prices, perhaps a 20% drop in the number of Brits coming here, plus probably 10% more of those coming choosing all-inclusive holidays out of misguided budget intentions or simple sheer stupidity (see below). But whilst the numbers of Brits decline, numbers of Irish, Russians, French, Germans, Italians, Polish and Scandinavians are all on the increase, many of whom actually have real cash to spend rather than just an overenthusiastic credit card.

And as the island moves more and more upmarket, Brits with real money will continue to come here and will continue to spend. Of course, many will still continue to worry. Chances are (after looking at the state of their own businesses here), they should indeed be worrying!

And on the subject of all inclusive, I'm sick and tired of hearing rubbish from parents that all-inclusive is so amazing. All-inclusive in a safe resort like Tenerife is a simple sign of laziness and ignorance. If parents are too lazy or inept to supervise and arrange entertainment for their kids and to control the number (and choice) of fizzy drinks the kids are throwing down their necks all day long courtesy of their unlimited kiddy-wristband and then refuse to curtail their adult evening entertainment knocking back cheap local rum in order to act like responsible parents (N.B. Mr & Mrs McCann!!) then those parents don't deserve to go on holiday in the first place. You're parents, its supposed to be a chore, get over it, spend time with your kids, take them around the island and teach them about life. Hell the kids might even get to enjoy a can of real Coca Cola rather than that syrup Happy-Shopper cola and the parents might get to sample some amazing local food that hasn't been slopped out after being re-heated from the day before.

He he, I love a good rant !

lol lol

Funny that Funky mentions about Irish, Russians, French, Germans, Italians, Polish and Scandinavians as we were up at Loro Parque the other day and I was amazed by the sheer number of esp German, Russian and Scandinavian visitors.

I would go as far as to say they well out numbered the English.

Good point Karl. Considering the prices at the Loro Parque this year, anyone who makes it inside is obviously well-heeled financially Laughing

Classy riposte from Seagull! Its nice to see the art of the witty comeback is still alive and well...

I have never been there and it's doubtful I ever will at their crazy prices and not only that I will remember that when I was mailing around trying to find someone to help Guillermo the sad one-eyed chimp who was in a cage in La Orotava they never even replied to my e-mail unlike Monkey World in the UK, which did. I remember thinking this Loro Parque place is supposed to be a very professional place but they don't even attend to their mail, and they are supposed to care about apes but clearly they do not. I think all they really care about is money!

They have a computer section at Loro Parque where the kids can use a pc and colour in different animals to print. Tom clicked print and nothing came out, he had spent 10 mins doing this picture. When I asked happiniess the lady there she said there was no paper.

That lit the fuse lol

What I asked how it could be in the whole of Loro Parque there was no paper and we have paid all this money to get in. Luckily her supervisor was listening in the background and came over, she offered to go to the office and get some. She said she would be 10 mins and explained this to the other lady, lets call her happiness lol.

When she had left about 4 mins later happiness said ok you have to leave I am closing !!!!! WHAT.

So we left and waited outside for the supervisor, when she got back just before 10 mins I told her the lady had locked up and gone. 'Impossible she said' but she had indeed gone. The supervisor then went over to a desk and started making phones calls and after about 10 mins the other one returned and words were had.

Anyhow Tom eventually printed out his picture. How that women has been put in an environment with children is beyond me, lazy just lazy lazy lazy.

Success in the end.

Very Happy

Well done for sticking to your guns karlb.

The minister for tourism should have a none too quiet word in this ladies ear.

She probably won't be sacked because of the horrendous costs of getting rid of non performing staff and she knows it. She'd probably like to be sacked and be given a lump sum of a few months wages and take a holiday for a while.

I can't believe that Karl what terrible service! how on earth are you meant to go on and recommend such a place when you get customer service like that.

On a more positive note I absolutely loved Loro Parque when I went and would go back again. I guess like any corporate business it's out to make money and many will pay it as many of its customers are holidaymakers

It wasn't the 'corporate business' of Loro Park that was at fault but the individual member of staff (witness her superior trying to improve matters). So many people cry because companies won't 'give them a job' yet when they get one they seem to revel in doing it as badly as possible.
