Hi Guys,
I'm new here so hello
I'm looking for a bit of help if you could be so kind as to help.
Basically, myself, a friend and his girlfriend have all been talking about moving abroad recently because our personal circumstances in life have changed. Before, we all had things stopping us - I was in a serious relationship which has sadly just ended after 3 years, and my mate and his girlfriend had jobs - but they've both since been made redundant - so we're now all at the stage where we've no commitments here in the UK so have nothing to stop us from moving. We're not the kind that are "looking for an easy life" - we're simply disgruntled at the current state of the UK, and with no commitments in life, we've decided that now is the time for a new challenge.
What we need to know really is how much do properties cost each month to rent? Are they already furnished? What are the basic wages like out in Tenerife for bar work, etc?
My mates girlfriend has experience in admin work (telephones, PC work, etc) - so her options aren't as limited, but myself and my mate don't have any worthwhile qualifications (i've been working as a "self-tought" engineer for 11 years, whereas my mate's experience is fishmongering and supermarket work).
We're quite prepared to work hard to live out there - we're just trying to work out how much we'd need to earn between us each month to keep our heads above water and how many hours we'd all have to put in each day. We'd be renting the property between the three of us, which helps a lot as the cost is divided three ways - but we'd still need to buy food, pay bills, and obviously find a job suitable to cover the costs.
I also have a loan of £200 per month to pay back for the next 5 years, so i'm £200 down each month before I already start......
Any advice would be helpful
Thanks guys! |

Hi Briggsy
Where abouts out here do you want to llive? different parts cost different amounts.
i live in the south of tenerife about 15 minutes from los cristianos and rents out here are reasonable..............1bed is about500€ and a 2 bed is about 650€-900€ depending on reort.
cost of living is cheap compared to england, but is relative to wages. So wages are no where near as high as UK.
There are jobs about in bars, restaurants,PR work and telesales which dont always need experience. between the 3 of you it would be safe to say that if you all 3 worked then rent would be no problem...........food is cheap in mercadona, icelands is expensive though lol
read the pages rob posted they will help and you need to get paper work sorted when you get out here.............people can give advise on this to.
hope this helps
if you want more help or just a chat about it you can email me

Thanks Strippersrus.
We're not too fussy to be honest. I've been to Los Gigantes on holiday, and liked it there despite it being a bit quiet. Los Christianos and Playa De Las Americas are probably more lively, but also more expensive - so really, anywhere between Los Christianos up to Los Gigantes would suit us. |

Have a look on Delmar Estate Agents Los Gigantes, that should give you some idea on how much you should pay for an apartment, although renting from Spanish is a lot cheaper. We are moving in May, and considering renting with Delmar first then looking around. You also need to apply for an NIE number asap, as they can take up to anytime between 3 and 6 weeks. Most employers want you have this, before giving you a contract. Bar Work around Los Gigantes pays 5 euros an hour, roughly £3.50 an hour. If you want an admin job, you have to speak fluent Spanish, which is what my partner wants to do, we are going to learn as soon as we get there. Bills sometimes are included in the rental, but I am going to allow £40 a month for electric, water and refuse.
Hope this helps

Me in a grumps??? Just in a hurry..
Most small apartments here include water, elec, rates, rubbish etc. Los Giantes is not the best place to go if there are 3 of you looking for work. By staying in Los Cristianos or Playa de las Americas you'll be near and handy to the largest work areas for unqualified people. Tips and hints are in those two articles _________________ .

My 1 bed apartment electricity bill usually comes in at about 60-70 Euros per quarter, but its only occupied about half the time. _________________ My Paranoia-Management Therapy is going great! Now they're only watching me half the time.... |

Hi Briggsy and welcome to our forum
I think what KEB says about the Spanish is important. I do admin work and you are definitely restricted if you only speak English. The more languages, the better here as there is such a diversity of cultures in all areas of Tenerife, particularly in the south.
Don't take offence at Rob: so many people on this forum ask similar questions and a lot are answered in the articles he's written.
I think if the three of you work then you'll have no problem paying rent in a shared apartment even if it is in Las Americas. I did the same when I first got here and shared with 2 friends. We survived, although we moved away from Las Americas as soon as we got a car! |
