Post Post subject: A return to the island prehaps...... Reply with quote

It appears that once again Ezzy hits a dilemma in life .... why when I'm settling down does my brain like to cause utter chaos

Part One.....It appears that my contract in my current job ends in May 09 and I can either extend it, take a permanent contract or leave.

Part Two.....Dave (the fella) decides he would like to return to Tenerife even if it's just to see how the 'summer season' goes....

Part Three....I was contemplating university and doing a degree and courses don't start till end of September

Part Four....Is it all starting to piece together to those of you reading this!?! Would it be such a bad thing to return when my contract ends and see how things slide or will I want to stay so badly I don't start university in the September

I HATE BEING AN ADULT MOST OF THE TIME ESPECIALLY AT TIMES LIKE THESE

I'm guessing this is more a rant, general chit chat ho hum .....

Is it such a bad thing to ask what you woud do?!?!

ADVICE VERY VERY MUCH WELCOME Smile

Why not go for it? If this time you land on your feet and want to stay, why not? Bearing in mind that at some point you'll need to start thinking about the future, you'll need to be thinking of a full time contract to enable pension contributions medical care etc to be available, if by September you don't have that then go back to the UK and university. Simple really.

Part One.....It appears that my contract in my current job ends in May 09 and I can either extend it, take a permanent contract or leave.
Option 1) Play safe and get your permenant contract in the UK, become an adult and start saving and planning for your future. Become another number instead of yourself.
Option 2) Try Tenerife again and if you're not settled with jobs then come back to uni in september.
Downside to both is that need money to keep you going in Tenerife and to go to uni.
Will you have sufficient savings by May09 to support yourself in Tenerife if you don't get work there straight away? Check out the poor exchange rate currently.

Part Two.....Dave (the fella) decides he would like to return to Tenerife even if it's just to see how the 'summer season' goes....
Does Dave plan on attempting to get a job or simply to party all the time while there? and can you trust him if he says he'll look for work? What's he do for a job in the UK, is there any call for it in Tenerife with the current job situation, bearing in mind it could get worse between now and May 09.

Part Three....I was contemplating university and doing a degree and courses don't start till end of September
When would you need to apply for uni and could you do it from Tenerife? If not when would you need to be back in the UK? If you came back to the UK and went to uni how would you fund it with no job?

Part Four....Is it all starting to piece together to those of you reading this!?! Would it be such a bad thing to return when my contract ends and see how things slide or will I want to stay so badly I don't start university in the September
Only you can answer this one, but I think by September you'll know if it's going to work out this time.

No, it's not; but my situation is different to yours which is different to the next persons.

ADVICE VERY VERY MUCH WELCOME Smile

Ultimately I believe it depends on your current Commitments in the UK. Happiness, income, debt, loans, mortgages, family etc.

I hope that all makes some sense to you or at least gives you more to think about Smile

Ezzy Ezzy Ezzy as Andy says only you can make the decision, I admit a hard one to take, As Andy states are you going to Tenerife to WORK and make a life for yourself or party party party if it is the latter stay at home.....if you intend to go to Tenerife.... you have lived there and know how hard it can be to survive if you are not prepaired to WORK hard, you WILL be home for Uni in September.
It's a hard world kid, and as an adult you have HARD decisions to make.

Sorry Embarassed

If it was me I would go for it (probably biased cos Im horrendously homesick anyway), but at the end of the day, whats the worst than can happen?
Give it a go. You might end up kicking yourself further down the line if you dont.....

I will have sufficient funds as I will be eligable for a bursary (government funded and non repayable) for travel, books etc. I may also be eligable for a accomodation loan but I am currently saving for this incase and I dont pay for the degree until I am earning in excess of £15000.00 , i also pretty much pay back what I've borrowed.

We wont be partying anywhere near as much as we did thats for sure lol...I can barely handle two nights back in the UK. We have decided if we were to return we wouldn't live in las americas and find jobs in waitressing for me and possible restaurant work for Dave. He works the machines in warehouses so he wouldn't be able to find work like that in Tenerife especially considering he doesn't speak spanish. We would also save enough rent plus deposit for the 4 months (June - Sept), I still have my bank with Santander.

Part Three....I was contemplating university and doing a degree and courses don't start till end of September
When would you need to apply for uni and could you do it from Tenerife? If not when would you need to be back in the UK? If you came back to the UK and went to uni how would you fund it with no job? I will be applying for Uni prior to coming out to Tenerife. Were we to stay I can defer my course a year or two so my options are pretty much open and I'm not shutting anything off.
I would find office work fairly easy in my home town and my uncle would be able to get work for Dave. We would initially live with my mum or friends and pay lodge to cut costs.

Part Four....Is it all starting to piece together to those of you reading this!?! Would it be such a bad thing to return when my contract ends and see how things slide or will I want to stay so badly I don't start university in the September

Definately and luckily were in a good situation what with both working full time with the bonus of overtime, were living in shared accomodation which is a steal and allows room to save : ) ...neither of us have any debt/loans.

I hope that all makes some sense to you or at least gives you more to think about Smile
Thank you! Very Happy

Looks like you've got it all covered but as I said your decision entirely.....well maybe something to do with Dave as well / lol. I don't believe this is a decision anyone else can make for you, others can only try to help ensure that you've thought of everything.

If you don't do it will you regret it in the future?
If you do it and fail will you feel that you shouldn't have tried?
If you do it and succeed, yippee you've done it Smile

Hi Ezzy,

I was in the same position as you cos we went back and pondered on whether to come back out or not for a second go but our situation is harder with having the 2 girls and a mortgage.

We made a hell of a decision to come back out, but i have to say at the minute we are ALL glad we did(still only 3 months in though!)

We were here 5 months last time and none of us worked and the girls didn't go to school because of the holidays over here, but this time they were into school in week 2 and i have been working since week 3.

You just never know.......give it a go, like what has been said what have you to lose really?

Fiona

If you're not wanting to stay in that job then you have the ideal opportunity to go away. I'm probably going to do the same when my contract ends at the end of Jan 09 but I have not managed to save much.

Ezzy - you're only young once. Take chances while you still can and before you settle down and have children/buy a house etc. It all gets more complicated from here on in!! Enjoy it while you can and don't spend too much time worrying. If you do decide to stay on in Tenerife after September you can always defer a place at Uni. that you may get (I did that and stayed in Germany another year). What are you thinking of studying? If it's Spanish then you can say it's to improve your Spanish! You know what Tenerife is like this time round and therefore you know what you're letting yourself in for.

Fiona - not been on here for a while but glad to hear you're ok and found work.
