On the topic of the wildlife of Tenerife is definitely Historia Natural de las Islas Canarias - Guía Básica by David and Zoe Bramwell and I have just been lucky enough to get hold of a copy from Amazon seeing as it is out of print now!

David Bramwell has a monopoly on books on plants and animals found here, which is good and bad for me - it's good that his books provide reference materials for my study of the animals and plants but bad because seeing as he has covered most angles it will be difficult for me to find one to persuade a publisher her to give me a book deal!

Anyway, back to the book I am recommending: it has info with photos and drawings for the insects, spiders, crustaceans, molluscs, reptiles, amphibians, fish, birds, mammals, plants, lichens, algae and fungi of the Canary Islands and habitat descriptions too. For a naturalist it gives answers to what a species is eg. I now know what type of mantis I had written about and I know what species of blenny it is I see in rockpools.

The photos are good too.

I don't think there is an English version, which could be a problem if you can't read Spanish, although there are English translations of his other books on the flora here.

Thanks for letting me know, Rob! You have as far as I can tell 1 of the most informative books available on the subject! If you have an English version that is of interest and I am wondering why they didn't keep up publishing that? I suppose it didn't sell well to Brits so they decided to keep it Spanish. I note his other books are far easier to get en español too. BTW, I came upon Historia Natural first at a conservation stand in Puerto and tried to buy it but the girl said it wasn't for sale but for info purposes only! I have loked for it since in shops with no luck so was lucky to find it on Amazon but it is an old copy from 1987!
