The resort of Puerto de la Cruz is the oldest of all Tenerife resorts, popular in Victorian times with winter visitors who often came on their doctors’ advice to winter in warmer climes. Puerto de la Cruz is not a modern, brash sun sea and sand holiday resort but rather an historic old town with a lovely climate that has for over 100 years welcomed visitors. There are modern hotels in Puerto de la Cruz catering for the holiday maker but these tend to cater for a different class of visitor and though the resort is quite large the atmosphere is very relaxed and cosmopolitan compared to the similar sized Playa de las Americas in the South. The central area of Puerto de la Cruz is busy throughout the day and evenings and café life is the norm, the historical streets and shady parks throughout the town and the reminders of the areas proud seafaring past are everywhere.
The resort of Puerto de la Cruz is not short of things to do and see; there are museums, orchid gardens, the Bananera (discover the history of the banana and it’s uses), the Botanical gardens (set up to harden off tropical plants before being exported again to Spain) and the Loro Parque, a bird/animal/sea mammal open air park which has around 1,300,000 visitors per year. Probably the best known attraction in Puerto de la Cruz is the Lago Martianez, a series of seawater pools conceived by the Lanzarote artist Cesar Manrique.
