Amarilla Golf Club - Club championship
After a delay of a week due to the poor weather at the beginning of the day the previous Sunday, the club championships got underway with Amarilla Golf course extending the tee times to enable the club to fit everyone in. Conditions were ideal with only sporadic flurries of wind and after a cool start early on it turned into a lovely warm day once the sun was up.
There were the usual reports of triumph and failure among the members but one match that must have made good viewing was between ex British boys champion Alan Murphy playing off 6 and Glen Davis playing off scratch, both players returning gross 73s. The result was decided on best back nine which tipped it in favour of Glen as Alan had put his drive into the barranco, Glen having made a similar mistake on the 16th! As Alan said afterwards, "I wouldn't mind coming last if I could shoot 73 every week."
The handicap secretary is going to be busy, particularly with the eventual winner on handicap Marion Yates having returned a net 66 (7 under par) playing off a handicap of 28!
