Captains tie 2006
Amarilla Golf Club’s annual Captains tie competition originated by and sponsored by Dave France is now in its twelfth year and gets bigger and more popular year by year. Conditions were perfect as a full house (with extras squeezed in) of players started in the near dark, to slowly wind their way around the course. The course owners, Amarilla Golf have made great strides during the last year in their efforts to clear and tidy many of the surrounding areas which used to hide errant golf balls making them very easy to see which should speed up the slow play that the club is plagued with. Some of the worst offenders of slow play are Past Captains! The four-ball containing the eventual winner lost two holes, completing their round over forty minutes behind the group in front, this is against all the rules of etiquette of golf. That’s my moan finished, I don’t suppose it will do any good but it’s good to get it off my chest!
Getting back to the golf; with 37 points, and for once no blobs, I thought that I might be in with a chance of some sort of prize but I was miles off the pace. First with 43 points playing off 4 was young Luis Bickerton, a fantastic round off the white tees and should help young Luis in his quest to get his handicap under his Father’s. Well done Luis but please remember that if you’re holding up players behind and you’ve lost more than a hole to the group in front it’s your duty to let the group behind play through. There were many other stories of good golf, Maureen Lillico came in with 41 points which must have seemed to her like the winning score and the countback for third place was between three players scoring 38 points!
The day was completed by the presentation at the Aries bar with many members taking the opportunity to sample the lunches laid on by Landlord Bill Braithwaite and his staff. I must apologise for the colour of the photographs, it comes from the yellow awning covering the terrace.
