Amarilla Golf Club – Masters 2006
Amarilla Golf Club of Tenerife held the ninth edition of their version of the ‘Masters’ on Sunday 15th October, sponsored as usual by Brian and Jan Masters, long standing members of the club. As usual the Tenerife weather was magnificent, with calm, warm, wind free conditions, expectations were high for a low winning score.
Young Lewis Bickerton exceeded those expectations, playing off a handicap of 2 he shot a gross four under par 67 for a net 65 to win by a margin of six shots, incidentally beating his Father Geoff, who was third, by the same 6 shots. An incredibly good round of golf from such a young man and certainly as we’ve all known for some time, a talent to be watched in the future.
The presentation was held at the Amarilla golf and country club terrace bar where past ‘Masters’ champion Ian Sharp demonstrated to young Lewis how to put on his new clothing; Lewis has lived in the temperate Tenerife climate for so long that he didn’t know how to put on a jacket! Is this a sign of things to come? Will we one day watch in knowing appreciation as Lewis is given his real Masters green jacket?
I believe that the rest of the field will applaud Lewis and his excellent round and his fellow prize winners will salute the fact that on the day he was in a class of his own. There was a new face among those collecting prizes, that of John Ford, a recently settled in new member and now, with time on his hands, he can bring down his handicap. Of course an Amarilla Golf Club major just wouldn’t be the same if ‘Super Gran’ didn’t collect something and sure enough; Janet Stanley scooped the ladies ‘super seniors’ trophy.
