Amarilla Golf: Steve Yates Memorial Trophy 2005
Sunday 4th September 2005 was one of the hottest days that I’ve ever experienced in Tenerife and a full house of competitors turned out for Steve’s memorial event. With a medal format and players starting at ten minute intervals in four players per slot it was bound to be slow going, add to this the fact that the rough mower was awaiting parts and we had a recipe for a nightmare for the later players. The last team out took over three hours to play the first nine and gave up (as did many others) when passing the bar after finishing the twelfth hole.
Congratulations must go to those that ‘stayed the course’ in the prevailing conditions. Many, many long drinks were imbibed at the bar and at the presentation and lunch in the clubhouse afterwards. This event has been upgraded to full ‘Major’ status and the board was duly presented to the Yates family who had come over ‘en-masse’ as usual to support the event and Steve’s memory.
