WG Ashall Trophy – ‘Old Bill’ 2006
Sunday 27th August saw a full house turn out for the annual ‘Old Bill’ Trophy on a hot but breezy day. The competition was once again sponsored by Bill and Gerry Braithwaite of Aries bar on Amarilla Golf, Old Bill Ashall’s old watering hole. Bill an ex RAF and Rhodesian air force pilot was fondly remembered for his ‘war stories’ and flying stunts, a real life character and a legend in his own lifetime. Old Bill started this competition as a friendly get together so that his pals could have a game of Golf and then get down to the serious business of quenching their thirsts after the game. This tradition carries on thanks to Bill and Gerry and long may it continue.
A calm start to the day (as usual) enabled everyone to get off to a peaceful start but the wind did get up to play havoc with a few cards going up the long sixteenth. At the end of the day it was a close run competition with Eddi Greygoose just getting first place on countback from Greg Cartwright, both on 38 points. Third was Captain Alan Watson with 37 points and a tale or two of….. if only.
The day was rounded off with drinks, lunch and the presentation at the Aries bar. For those of us who didn’t manage to get among the points there’s always the Steve Yates Memorial Trophy next week.
