Getting to Know Los Cristianos
Being the second largest holiday resort, Los Cristianos in the south of Tenerife has retained much of it's old world charm and still has that small fishing village ambiance about it especially in the old town centre. The port is lovely with Canarian fishing boats bobbing on the water as well as some rather smart yachts and sail boats at certain times of the year, which makes it a fabulous place to wander around. The port is also home to the ferry and hydrofoil that leaves daily to the neighbouring island of La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro, so the place is pretty vibrant with people arriving and leaving the island during the day.
The seafront around San Telmo boasts the lovely Playa de las Vistas, where the sand was imported from the Sahara and mixed with the volcanic sand from Tenerife, but there is a huge expanse of beaches along this particular seafront although Playa de las Vistas has to be the best. The great part about this area is the beaches stretch along areas where they are lots of bars, restaurants and shops, so a day at the beach can be nicely broken up with a couple of hours lounging around catching a few rays and then a nice cooling drink at one of the many bars. One thing about the beaches here are that they are pretty well maintained by the council.
A lot of the newer holiday complexes in Los Cristianos are a little distance away from the town centre as well as the beaches but these newer developments are stylish and comfortable with a lot more imagination having gone into the design and layouts of them. These lovely and very well maintained complexes although further away from the beach areas are nonetheless only about a 10 minute walk, and if you are heading for the beach from say the lovely new development of Oasis del Sur, then it is downhill all the way. However, it is an uphill climb on the way back to the complex but that is all part of the charm of Los Cristianos as you will always find yourself either climbing or down a hill. With this said for anyone with a disability could find this to be a problem, which means you need to check out just where you are planning to stay if anyone in your party is disabled.
Driving around Los Cristianos, if you are thinking about renting a car, can be a little awkward and parking is a bit of a nightmare. The streets are narrow and do tend to be slow moving. Cars that are illegally parked do get towed away but there are underground car parks so this problem can be alleviated.
There is a superb variety of restaurants in Los Cristianos from Canarian, Chinese, Spanish, Mexican as well as Indian to name but a few. With the huge influx of British holidaymakers, the good old 'English Breakfast' is found everywhere in the town and when it comes to bars and pubs, there is no shortage of these either. One great thing about Tenerife is that the drinking laws have been relaxed which means visitors can enjoy a cooling drink whenever they want to these days.
Los Cristianos is a lovely small town that really does boast a wonderfully vibrant town centre. The areas around the town are comfortably spacious feeling with a nice relaxed atmosphere that adds to the charm of the area. It is definitely a great place for families to spend some quality holiday time with delightful newer and older complexes offering superb facilities which include swimming pools and play areas for children.
