Why do we call it real estate in Tenerife when it’s such an American expression which very few European English speakers use? Quite simply it’s the accepted translation of the Spanish word ‘inmobiliaria’ which we would translate as an estate agents in Tenerife. To be strictly accurate the British use of the term is inaccurate as the original definition of an estate agent was someone who managed one’s estate. These ‘estate agents’ would also be responsible for the selling of properties belonging to the estate and of acquiring new property on behalf of the estate owners. These same people then took on ‘commissions’ (usually sales of properties) from individuals and as the number of large estates dwindled so the practice of selling property became the mainstay of the agents business. Hence we have ‘inmobiliaria Tenerife or real estate in Tenerife as it translates and usually run by the Spanish as well as estate agents in Tenerife usually run by the British. Either way it’s quite simply, property for sale in Tenerife.
